You heard you will start getting errors? What do you mean by that? I've been using an external drive with SSL for over 4 years (man I feel old).

Well i got a normal hardrive in an enclosure to make it external and a buddy of mine was telling me I iwll get errors because the usb plug gets loose and right now sometimes when im playing the music stops, or it freezes and I think thats a problem due to this because the usb on the enclosure is loose.

Hello Mike,

If there is a problem with the usb port on the HD then it would disconnect completely.
Not to say the hard drive still might be having issues.
In my experience buying an HD with a durable enclosure is the most important.
I would stay away from WD Passport drives as they tend to go to sleep a lot and I've never figured out how to get around that.

If your current HD isn't disconnecting but your still having freezing issues it could be due to corrupt files in your library.

Have you built all of your overviews and gotten rid of any corrupt files the builder found?

Ive built overviews of everything, but there are some songs that wouldn't get an over built of but the builder didn't find any corrupt files ...

im using a nextstar 3 hd enclosure and side to side if i wiggle the cord my usb is movable , dosn't come out but moves ...

Most usb inputs are loose. Its meant to give a little to avoid it breaking easily.

I would be a little suspect about the files that don't get their overview built.

I would check to see if the files that your trying to build overviews on are 'read and write' files.
If they are 'read only' you won't be able to save overview info to them.

To open up a file from within SSL highlight the file and hold down ctrl+R (PC) or apple+R (Mac).
This will open up a separate browser and the song should be highlighted.
From there either right click and go to 'properties' (PC) or hold down apple+I (Mac) to 'get info'.
Once in there you can check to see if the files is 'read and write'.

If it is read only than you will want to change the properties of the folder the song is in and more than likely that will change the properties of all the songs your having issues with.

Once done, rescan your id3 tags, and then click the build overviews tab again.
At that point it will build overviews for any files that haven't had their overview built.

Let us know how you get along:)

Well, My buddy also told me to check my buffer settings... the songs that don't build overviews if I select them then the overviews are built ...

If you see the wave form when you load the track onto the virtual deck then the overview has been built for that file.

The buffer setting will eat up more cpu depending on where its set but its not going to cause the tracks to stop playing. If you notice a usb light popping on at the top of the screen then SSL isn't getting enough juice.
If that is the case you will want to boost the usb audio buffer up to the right until that usb light stops popping on.
If your not seeing the usb light coming on then there is no need to adjust the usb audio buffer.

When you say the music stops or freezes.. does it just do this briefly?

Yeah it does it briefly but then it stops the song and I have to re-load etc...
it's a 712mhZ and that's all thats on it is Serato nothing else is in use ... or even on it.

A 712mhZ processor is well under the minimum system requirements.

1.5 GhZ is the minimum.

You might be able to run it without the issues but you will definitely need to boost your usb audio buffer, probably to the max (far right).

Also decrease the maximum screen updates to 45 or 30.

Try it out and see if it fixes the freezing issues.
