This is a known issue with AAC files and 1.8.2.
Try selecting all the files within your iTunes and right clicking one, then select "Get Info". Once the ID3 tag editor comes up -- click cancel. Then open SSL and see if your BPMs are back.

Ok as far as the missing bpm's I think I have fixed that. within itunes right click the song that you know is missing a bpm in serato, Then click convert ID3 tag, Then Check Reverse Unicode, Then Click OK. Then open up SSL see if your bpm is there. I then went back to itunes clicked on my recently added folder selected all the songs(since I noticed they were songs I had just added)clicked covert ID3 tag, Checked Reverse Unicode, Clicked ok and it does all the songs selected!

i have the same mac profile as erwin but that i use a Lacie terabyte external drive and I DONT USE ITUNES except to write id3 tags for vinyl rips and retrieving tags for cd imports via the 'net (both of which have worked excellent). i dont use itunes in SSL, strictly crates. so, perhaps it isn't an itunes-settings issue since my settings DO NOT allow SSL to read my itunes library in the first place.
furthermore, i have attempted to rebuild overviews to fix these 7-digit bpm readings, which it does at first. but then, i load a few these songs to verify my results. when i do this, the bpm field instantly resets back to the 7 digit bpm after being fixed manually and/or using the overview builder.
i just rescanned id3 tags, but that didn't help.
i currently have 1288 tracks that run about 12989654 bpm.
i am currnetly rebuilding overviews (again) for these tracks.
this has been very time consuming and frustrating.

Ok guys I have been playing with this issue here in the lab.
Lets try this:
Go into the internal drive and open the Music folder. In there you will see a ScratchLIVE folder. In there you will see a DatabaseV2 file -- re-name this file anything you want.
If you run an external HD -- re-name the DatabaseV2 file that is in the ScratchLIVE folder in there aswell.
Then go into iTunes -- if you use it -- and select all the songs, right-click one and hit "Get Info". Allow the warning and when the ID3 tag editor comes up click cancel.
Then open SSL -- let it finish scanning your tags, then go into the set-up and click on re-scan ID3 tags and let it finish. Does this help any of you with this problem?

Hmm…known issue with AAC files recording tags. I wonder if this is across the board with Video-SL as well. That might explain why when using Video-SL it’s not writing tags to the MP4 files.

This is an issue with 1.8.2 and aac files.
I'm pretty sure there are only two known fixes for this.
The first would be to convert all of the aac files to mp3 format.
The second would be to downgrade to 1.8.1 or 1.8 and rebuild your overviews.

for mac osx users:
however inconvenient this sounds, i said f*ck it, backed up my stuff, deleted current SSL software, reinstalled my operating system (un-archived), reinstalled 1.8.2 and rebuilt overviews for all track w/1000000 or more bpm's.
it worked just fine so far.

Hi Erwin De Nul,
My guess is that you're using a Powerbook or other G4 (PowerPC) based Mac. This is a known issue with version 1.8.2 on these machines, and we'll make a fix available to you as soon as we can.
As Zach suggested, there are only two ways to work around this in the meantime:
- Use an older version of Scratch LIVE.
1) Download the installer for 1.8.1 if you don't already have it.
2) To revert to an older version you should open the /Library/Receipts folder on the root of your hard disk (usually "Macintosh HD" or similar) and trash the files called "Scratch LIVE App.pkg" and "Scratch LIVE Driver.pkg".
4) Now run the 1.8.1 installer.
or:
- Convert your AAC files to MP3 (keep the old files) and use the copies for now.

Converting my files to MP3 ???? Do you think I'm stupid or what???
I buy a lot of songs on i Tunes and converting them to MP3 will resort in a lost of quality. I play at big party's and thru a big PA you would hear the lost.
I have 4000 MP4 files and I waited to buy SSL untill they made it possible to play MP4 files. I hope that this bug will be fixed very soon. Before that, I will not use SSL on my gigs.

I have a similar problem, although i'm using 1.81 on a macbook with OS X 10.5.5.
frequently, after i shut down the laptop, i open serato to find that only a portion of the tracks are displaying bpms (some of which are incorrect). the majority show nothing.
i've found that when i load them in serato, the information returns. my quick fix has been to disconnect the usb, load the first mp3, and quickly cycle through the rest by tapping the "next" button. this is time-consuming, but it restores all the missing bpms.
is there a better solution? i'm planning on loading a much larger music library but am unwilling to devote this much time to repetitive motion. again, this is a problem that crops up at least once every two weeks.

Erwin... so just to clarify.. when you go into the setup screen and look in the lower left hand corner it says version 1.8.1?
If so, did you then drag/drop your whacky bpmed files back onto the build overviews tab to recalculate the proper bpm?

Zach... When I go in the setup screen and look in the lower left hand corner is says 1.8.1 (18120).
I DID drag/drop the files onto the build overvieuws tab to recalculate the proper bpm. But as soon I load a track into a player, the number is changing.

Try deleting the bpm from the file all together.
Once done, redrag the file onto the build overviews tab to calculate the bpm again.
Now drag/drop onto a virtual deck.
Does the proper bpm stay now?

Try using iTunes to strip one of your files and convert the tag version to 2.3.
Note: This will delete any cues or loops you might have in your files. You might want to try this on one track first.
If you don't use iTunes than you'll want to go into the 'advanced' preferences of iTunes first and uncheck the 'copy files to iTunes music when adding to library' option.
Once you've done that than drag and drop all of your music into iTunes and follow the directions below.
1. Completely quit all programs.
2. Open iTunes.
3. Click on your 'music' to show all the songs in your library.
4. Select all (apple+a Mac) (ctrl+a PC) or select one song for testing purposes.
5. Click on the 'advanced' column.
6. Select 'convert id3 tags'.
7. Check the 'id3 tag version' and select 'none'.
8. Press 'ok'.
9. Click on the 'advanced' column.
10. Select 'convert id3 tags'.
11. Check the 'id3 tag version' and select '2.3'.
12. Press 'ok'.
Once your done with this procedure you can delete everything out of iTunes by highlighting everything (apple+a Mac or ctrl+a PC) and pressing the delete key.
Now open SSL, rebuild the overview, and see if that fixes the problem.
Let us know your findings.

These fixes have worked for everyone else. I'm afraid you might not be doing something correctly.
I suggest giving us a call so we can do a WebEx meeting over the phone and help you sort this out.

who is "everyone else"?
I exactly did everything as you asked. It already took me hours.
Calling you will be a problem. I'm from Belgium you know. I don't want to spend a fortune on calling you. Hope you understand...
Another problem: I took Serato for the first time this weekend for a gig. The other day I wanted to look in the overview window to check the records I played, but the overvieuw window was... empty...

The issue your having is a known issue that other users have experienced.
There are threads other than this one talking about it.
I'm not sure what else to tell you aside from give us a call.
As for the second problem... SSL's review tab will empty out once you shut down SSL.
If your wanting to save the set you played for review later I suggest dragging/dropping the files from the review tab into a crate.
