What is Scratch LIVE?
Scratch LIVE is the ultimate software and hardware solution for bridging the analog world of vinyl and the digital world of computer audio files. Using regular turntables or CD players, you can scratch and mix files from your Mac or Windows computer's CD or hard drive, add in a live mic input for scratching, and even bypass to standard vinyl if you wish. Scratch LIVE is the complete digital solution for the vinyl junkie - take your entire collection wherever you go and leave your precious vinyl at home!
Serato Scratch LIVE is exclusively available through Rane Corporation and can be purchased in three different complete system packages. The first of these is the highly awarded Serato Scratch LIVE package which includes the extremely rugged SL 1 USB hardware interface. Serato Scratch LIVE is also available with the Rane TTM 57SL high performance DJ mixer and the Rane MP 4 rack mountable mixer.
If you want to connect Serato Scratch LIVE to your existing mixer, you can purchase the original Scratch LIVE package that ships with the SL 1.
What is the SL 1?
The Scratch LIVE SL 1 USB interface connects one or two standard vinyl or CD turntables to your computer using a single USB cable and audio connections to your DJ mixer.
This portable USB interface was released by Serato back in 2004 and has been manufactured by Rane Corporation to their high quality standards ever since. The SL 1 is a proven performer that is renowned for its durability and reliability.
The SL 1 is praised for its very low latency performance, this means the response time from touching the decks to hearing an audio signal is extremely fast. Serato engineers developed system level audio drivers for the SL 1 that allow it to operate accurately and reliably at faster speeds than any other similar package.
The SL 1 USB interface is included in the Scratch LIVE package along with Serato’s Scratch LIVE software and the accessories you need to DJ with music from inside your computer.

Serato Scratch LIVE Software for the SL 1
Serato Scratch LIVE software puts you in complete control of your DJ experience. Scratch LIVE will not automatically mix for you, by design.
Instead, you have a deep view into your music collection and control of it with unparalleled precision. As a DJ, you can use traditional styles of mixing or explore uncharted territory with an array of unique tools and performance features at your fingertips.
Real time tempo metering and waveform coloring based on spectral content provide a picture of what your music is doing both sonically and rhythmically.
The signature "virtual deck" gives you a quick overview of the duration, pitch and BPM of your selected music in real time. You can use turntables, CD players or supported MIDI devices to control the virtual decks in Scratch LIVE.
By creating cue or loop points you can also rearrange or remix a track with a vast array of computer keyboard shortcuts or you can use an additional MIDI controller.
The Scratch LIVE music library is tailored for performance work. Tracks can be rapidly located with a simple text search and assigned to the virtual deck in seconds. Instant doubles allows you to load the same track onto both virtual decks, which is just like having two records of every song in your collection.
The Scratch LIVE library allows you to build crates and subcrates to keep your music organised. You can simply access music from connected hard drives or a CD inserted in your computer. There is also an option to access your iTunes™ library and playlists for quick and easy start up.
It is simple to archive your precious vinyl record collection as high grade AIFF audio files with the input recording function. If you are feeling musically creative, the SL 1 has a microphone input that can capture sound quickly into a Scratch LIVE "recorded" crate. You can then add your recorded vocal or instrument into your mix and scratch it with the Control Vinyl or CD.
Scratch LIVE Control Vinyl and CDs
The Scratch LIVE Control Vinyl and Control CDs each contain the Scratch LIVE Control Tone, a Serato exclusive and unique signal which allows the Scratch LIVE software to track the motion of the record, simulating the same movement with digital audio. Serato call this technology “noise map”.
The result is a feel and sound indistinguishable from playing regular vinyl. As a producer and DJ, the track you finished in the studio today can be played out on a real turntable tonight. For even more music sources, the pass thru outputs on the SL 1 allow you to select a regular vinyl record or CD when you want to, giving the ultimate flexibility to any turntablist or digital DJ.
