This scratchLIVE will not shut down properly. It always goes inactive after I try to shut it down, then I have no choice but to force quit. The problem is I can't save any of the cues I set up or any work I have done. This problem has been going on for months! Everything is updated. Help! Also, If I leave SL running and leave for say 15 min., when I return the only thing I can do is load songs on the decks, but not play them. Then I have to force shut down.

Hello selectinverse,
It sounds like your comp is going to sleep.
Go into the system preferences - energy saver.
Click the 'show details' tab and move the sliders to 'never'.
Also, uncheck the option for 'put hard disc to sleep when possible'.
Let us know if your still having issues.

Ok, I just unchecked the option, and I moved the 2nd slider to "never" also. I'll give it a try.
Is there a way, besides by looking at the icons in SSL, to find corrupt files? Is there a way in finder? It seems like I keep having corrupt files, and it takes time looking up each file name, and dragging it to the trash.

Just look at the corrupt file in SSL.
Once you find a corrupt file, highlight it, and hold down ctrl+shift+delete.
This will delete it entirely from your hard drive.

Sorry, that does not work as you said. (I have protect library un-checked)
It will work with missing files just fine. (files with ? icon)
Same situation if I look at all songs, or itunes list.

If you see an iTunes logo next to the file then you will need to delete it from iTunes and then open SSL, uncheck 'read iTunes library' and delete it from SSL.

OK, yes I guess the cracked CD icon is an iTunes logo. All of my corrupt files are showing that icon. Overviews are still not building, but I still have some corrupt files left. Sometimes only 10 overviews will build, other times 200. Every time, however, overviews are never totally built. What happens, is the SSL quits unexpectedly or it just seems to stop mid file.

Yes.. if there is a corrupt file coming from iTunes you will see a cracked iTunes logo next to the file.
When the builder crashes open up the Scratch LIVE folder inside the 'Music' folder on your internal drive and look at the 'overviewbuilder.log' file.
That will tell you the last song that the builder was building and got stuck on.
Take that track out of the iTunes library and SSL library and then click the build overviews tab again to continue where you left off.

It has been almost 1 month since I've been on here for help, but my problems have not changed at all. I re-scan tags, build overviews, and manually go through and play songs (so that the bpm and bit rate will change, and show up in list). However, NONE OF THIS INFO WILL EVER SAVE, SINCE SSL WILL NOT SHUT DOWN. So, it's as if I never did it. Why will it not shut down? It has not in over 6 months. I try, and it tells me it went unresponsive upon shutdown every time. Please help. I like to sort by bpm, but the songs are always showing as if I have never played them, but I have, some dozens of times. The bpms change ,and the bit rate shows up and the song info lights up once I play them, for the entire session, but that session only.

Hey selectinverse,
If SSL is having a hard time closing its probably due to a corrupt databaseV2 file.
Try this:
Rename the databaseV2 files from the 'Scratch LIVE' folder located in your 'Music' or 'My Music' folder on your internal drive, and in your _ScratchLIVE_ folder on your external drive (only if you have imported tracks off of an external).
To get to your _ScratchLIVE_ folder, open SSL, click the import tab, highlight your external drive, highlight the _ScratchLIVE_ folder, and press ctrl+r (PC) or apple+r (Mac).
This will open up a separate browser and show you the contents of the _ScratchLIVE_ folder on your external.
From here keep that browser window open, completely quit SSL, and then rename the databaseV2 file in the separate browser window to something like 'databaseV2_corrupt".
Open SSL.
If done correctly you will see your tags getting re-written at the bottom of the screen.
Once its done, try shutting down SSL.
Let us know how you get along.

You shouldn't need to open the database file... just rename it.
As for the renamed databaseV2 files.. you can throw them in the trash.
If you safely remove your external, open SSL, and shut it down does it shut down easily?

Either make sure your cap locks are on or go to the setup screen and uncheck the option for 'playback keys use shift'.

Is there any other programs to replace itunes that will work with SSL? I got worried I'd loose my iphone, so i updated itunes so i could sync my iphone and back up my contacts. I got my problem back with itunes crashing upon opening. It's not just my problem, as you can see here:

I'm starting to look for another external HD that may work better. Serato works well if I play songs only on my internal HD, but poorly with my external.
The main problem is this: I load a track, and it takes a while for the wave form to appear. Sometimes, the song plays faster than the waveform appears, so the song cuts off. Sometimes just for 5 seconds and sometimes for good, until I reload the song.
Also, there are usb dropouts when I use my external. Its a WD my book 2tb

If you pre built your overviews then this wouldn't be an issue as building your overviews will pre build the wave readout you see when you load a track onto the virtual deck.
As for programs that would replace iTunes.. I would just import your music directly into SSL via the import tab.
Relying on iTunes, in my opinion, is more of a headache than its worth.
As for dropouts... what OSX version are you running?
How is your external drive formatted?
How much ram do you have on your comp?
Do you always make sure to turn off Bluetooth and your airport card?
Let me know and we'll go from there.

with my external format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

Used: 761.62 GB on disk
Because of my problems, I went back to the origional version of OXS that came with my laptop out of the box: 10.4.11
I was told it was the most solid.
I have built overviews for the songs, that's the thing. It's not like I've never played the songs before either. I've spent months building overviews each time I go to sleep at night or leave the house, but I always get hung up on a corrupt file, and it stops. Then, I have to force quit, restart, and delete the corrupt file/files.
If I turn read itunes library off, is there another location to store my songs? Would this be a better idea? Where are those files I import to SSL?
Perhaps I'm not importing properly? I go to import, and find the song, then I drag it to the crate I'm building.
When I look in the finder window for ssl , imported, last imported.. It's empty.
Could I just build my library here?

There isn't a wrong way to import music.
It definitely sounds like your dealing with extremely corrupt files.
Where are you getting your music?
Are you running your tracks through any other audio application prior to the files getting imported into SSL?
Yes. Click the import tab, locate your music in the 'iTunes Music' folder, and drag/drop them into the program.
Absolutely.

Ok, but I don't have enough room to import all my tracks.
I'm afraid I'm not sure you mean by drag drop them into the program. Where into "all"? Just simply into the list? Will this make duplicates? I already have too many duplicates.
Yes I have the feeling I seriously damaged my library by using a program called Tangerine! It was back before SSL could determine bpm (at least I didn't know how yet). It scanned your Itunes library and determined the bpm and wrote the tags. It seems like CDs I imported from 5 years ago and worked fine, are now showing up as corrupt in SSL.
Thanks again

When you 'import" music into SSL it doesn't actually import the music file, it only creates an information tag that tells the program where the file is stored.
Simply drag/drop onto the word "all" or into specific crates.
SSL will not import the same song from the same location twice.
You will not duplicate your library.
If you do see duplicates its going to be because you have duplicates of your files on your hard drive.

I have never heard of Tangerine or know anything about it.
You might want to try stripping the tag of one of the files that keeps coming up as corrupt
Here are directions on stripping and converting your tags using iTunes.

I have yet to strip down my id3 tags, but I remember another problem I forgot to ask about. I have a large amount of files that, no matter how many times I play them, they are never remembered my SSL. (they do not stay bright green, the length does not save, and the bpm does not save) They also have no icon on the far left "status" column. Building overviews and rescanning id3 tags doesn't save this info either. Each time I play the songs, it's like the first time. I like to group my files in bpm order, but these always end up blank, so I have to play them each session to relearn their values.

ok, the Length does show in some of them always. Then it's only an issue with the bpm.

Try rebuilding your databaseV2 file.
1. Completely shut down SSL.
2. Open your Macintosh HD drive.
3. Click on your 'Music' folder (you might need to click on the house icon to see your music folder).
4. Open the 'ScratchLIVE' folder.
5. Rename the 'databaseV2' file to something other than its original name. I usually rename it 'corruptdatabaseV2'.
If your using an external drive open the _ScratchLIVE_ folder on your external and rename the databaseV2 file in there as well.
6. Re-open SSL.
If done correctly you will see your tags getting re-written at the bottom of the page.
Note: Rebuilding the databaseV2 file will revert all of the 'date added' dates to today's date and will delete any files out of SSL that aren't currently in a crate or playlist.
Let us know if that fixes it;)

If your having this issue again I would try rebuilding your databaseV2 files again.
If your still having issues after rebuilding your database please analyze one of the problem files, shut down SSL, re-open it, and see if that info is there.
