Mac OS X Version 10.5.2 not officially supported
Scratch LIVE users have reported various problems, including increased USB dropouts, after installing the 10.5.2 update of Mac OS X.
While these are yet to be confirmed and followed up with Apple, it is currently NOT recommended that users update to 10.5.2.
Users who have already updated and are experiencing problems should start a topic in the help forum to let us know the details and receive technical support.

It is the truth. Had Serato since 1.63 had Intel Macbook 2.0 DC Processor and 2 gigs of ram for over a year. Recently even got the power supply for my serato box, and prior to 10.5.2, had all performance settings TO THE MAX including Hi-Fi Resampler on with absolutely NO USB DROPOUTS. After 10.5.2, no matter what I do, no matter how low my performance settings are, I get terrible USB Dropout, to the point of SILENCE in my sound for 1-3 seconds. PLEASE HELP!!!!

My drop outs stopped when I turned off airport and blue tooth...but the main problem I'm having is getting all my songs to load from itunes. First of all I cant use my external at all when I scan the tags it crashes immediately...Then when I try to go the internal HD route, serato will crash a couple times before it will scan the tags...even then I've noticed in the middle of gigs that songs will just disappear..I've got to switch to an ipod and re boot the program and they generally come back...am I doing something else wrong? is is not compatibility issues?

got minor problems with 10.5.2 screen temporarily freezes when playing like 1-2 second freeze....:(

8:31 PM - 16 March, 2008
I just upgraded to 10.5 and stupidly let the software update upgrade me to 10.5.2. At a gig, the audio started dropping out on me for 1-2 seconds at a time, almost with every track i loaded in. I use a macbook 2ghz with 2 gigs of ram, control vinyl for my turntables, and a rane 56 mixer (if you serato guys need my system profile, you just let me know). I've never had any problem with audio drop out before this. I put all the settings on the lowest cpu load and it still continued to happen. I checked my activity monitor and the cpu was only running 30%-45%. I turned off wireless airport and bluetooth as always. The issue persists.
The problem would happen once per track loaded usually. I would load up the new track, adjust the pitch maybe, and cue it up. the drop out would most often occur on the two tracks playing simultaneously in a blend over the system. Sometimes it would occur before I played the next track over the master out, but mostly it would drop out both during a blend (the last time you'd want it to happen :/ ).
I'm guessing I should downgrade to 10.5.1? 10.5? How far away is this fix? Please help, as I simply cannot go through that again with the drop outs. Those dancers might be drunk, but they're not THAT drunk.

I'm new to this board and I'm also concerned over this. I just got SSL and downloaded version 1.8 about 2 weeks ago and I'm running it from a Macbook 2.2Ghz, 4GB RAM, 120GB HD with Leopard 10.5.2. I have an external HD plugged in with about 200 songs (.m4a/AAC format). It's not my official library by any means but I just use this to mess around with at home for the time being (I have a friend who's ripping my CD library for me). I'm fortunate to not experience any USB dropouts (yet) but my concern is screen freezing. I normally just start up the Macbook (with the hardware connected), launch SSL and click on Import and select the folder called "AAC music" from my external drive. I then drag and drop then entire folder to the crate area (left side). It scans all the tracks and then I proceed. I drag and drop a track to left deck, drop the needle and play the track. Then I select another track for the right deck. This is where the freezing occurs and what kills me is that I cannot re-create this problem at will. Sometimes it freezes, sometimes it doesn't. I know it's not just the right deck, it could be either. When the screen freezes, the music continues to play (sometimes right before the screen freezes, the track that I select to drag and drop to the empty deck actual does get there as I can still hear it when I queue it up in my headphones). I have not built any overviews yet...could this be my issue? Could it be the music format (AAC)? Is it because of the external drive? I have not played out with it yet but I'm scared that if this issue persists, I simply can use it to play live. Any help would be greatly appreciated for this noob. :o)
Cheers!

Since some people reading this thread may miss this from other conversations about 10.5.2:
It seems that 10.5.2 is working well for people who bought new Macs that came with 10.5.2 pre-installed (and on the included OS installer discs). I have one of the new MacBooks with 10.5.2, and have not had *any* dropouts (or any other problems with SSL) in several weeks of use during my 5-hour gigs). My DropoutCount.log (in ~/Music/ScratchLIVE) shows "0" for every regular set I've played, in fact.
I've also seen 10.5.2 working well on previous-generation MacBooks that use the "Santa Rosa" chipset (the revision of MacBook that was produced between November 2007 and February 2008). (That was the first MacBook model that allowed use of 4gb RAM, and changed USB port assignments so that none of the external USB connections are shared with the keyboard/trackpad, as was the case on the older MacBooks).
From the information I've seen here and elsewhere, the problems with 10.5.2 are mostly affecting people with older versions of the MacBook and MacBook Pro (the versions prior to Apple adopting the Santa Rosa chipset for these computers).

To enforce DJMark's theory: I use a Macbook 3.1 (Santa Rosa, 2GB RAM, 2,2GHz) with 10.5.2 without problems. 10.5.2 was not the native install, I updated from 10.5. No dropouts experienced.

I got 2 disks from an Apple distributor yesterday - installed 10.5 successfully.
To my horror, my log in password was no longer accepted. If anyone encounters the same problem when rolling back from 10.5.poo.........

Interestingly, my son was getting dropouts at a gig Saturday night and at one today. He's got a black MacBook (10.5.2) w/2g ram and a 57sl. On both occasions, switching from the left (closest to the screen) USB port to the right (closest to the trackpad) USB port seems to have cured the problem. Both times, he stopped both CDs and switched the cable with Serato open...

I used to have this problem. I use a first-generation Macbook 2.0GHz Core Duo, 1 GB RAM, came with Tiger but upgraded to 10.5 Leopard and Software Update to upgrade to 10.5.2.
I had dropouts every gig, regardless of Airport or Bluetooth being on or off, or which port the SL1 was plugged into. Dropouts occurred every 5-10 minutes.
MY SOLUTION -- after doing the update for Garageband (sorry can't remember the version number, but just update Garageband to the latest version), and always plugging the SL1 into the USB port closest to the trackpad, I no longer have dropouts. Not one.
Hope that helps some of you!

jepe: cool that you're having no problems, but you should really match your two RAM modules (replace the 512mb you apparently have in one slot with another 2gb part of the same brand as the one 2gb part you now have). You gain performance by having matched RAM in the slots, and 2gb RAM is really cheap.

It's not out of the question that a Garageband update may have patched some stuff in the System files.
I have also seen cases where simply downloading a Combo Update and running it (even when it's the same OS version currently installed) fixes problems.
It's hard to know for sure about some of this stuff, since Apple is not terribly detailed in its release notes about software updates.

Part of the "legitimate solution" is to simply calm down (and start your own thread with some very detailed information about your setup). Getting all worked up interferes with the kind of logical troubleshooting that needs to be done. And whatever problem(s) there might be with OS 10.5.2 probably aren't Serato's to fix...it seems most likely it's some change that Apple made that negatively affected certain hardware revisions.
I've now had a new MacBook for a month (the newest hardware version), running 10.5.2 with SSL 1.8.0, and it's given me no problems whatsoever. Not a single dropout in regular use, and I've used it a lot. I mention this (again) to point out that there are a number of people with NO PROBLEMS from OS 10.5.2. So blaming Serato seems inaccurate, as well as not helping you fix whatever issue you're having.

Just to clarify, I don't think I ever blamed Serato?
by 'legitimate' I just mean a legit reason as to why this (usb dropouts, SSL screen freezing) is happening to myself and others when we're running all the right equipment at the right specs and settings..feel me?! It's DUMB frustrating, becuase I don't know what to do to resolve this ish and I need to play every week with this computer..
Not to mention, I spent loot on the new macbook, etc. and it would be nice to think that it will not fail me @ gigs. I'm not tryin to be negative, I want to be part of the solution here because I know others are in the same boat. I need to get this figured out ASAP, basically TODAY in order to do what I do..
I have my setup info listed in my profile , any help or suggestions appreciated.

maybe turning off the motion sensor could make a difference... want to give it a try?

Thanks for the info...what you have is actually not a "new" MacBook, it's the very first MacBook hardware version from 2006. Those seem to be the ones having the most trouble with 10.5.2.
The solution seems to be reinstalling 10.5.1 (or 10.4.11, which also seems to work fine). Either way, it requires a complete OS reinstall...there's no way to "roll back" from a later version.

thanks for the input DJ Mark, appreciate it. My mistake on the description, by 'new' I meant new to me.. somewhat innacurate I suppose. I'll try and track down a version of 10.5.1 or 10.4.11 and reinstall. I'll post up my results.

I've updated garage band, and since I've had no AUDIBLE dropouts. the usb light goes on frequently, however it doesn't seem to be affecting the audio as it did before. (Before I was getting 1-2 second audio dropouts). I used at a gig last night with no audio dropouts, so that was sweet. However, this is still a temporary position I hope we're all in, I still feel it's probably a good move for me to go down an OS until 10.5.2 is trustworthy. The other problem I'm STILL having is this: If I'm in SSL and take a short break from playing (playing with someone else live, or at home) the screen will freeze up on me. When I click on the waveform I get nothing, and it won't play in internal either. When I go to exit at that point to restart, I just get a rainbow wheel and have to force quit because it's not responding. This happens EVERY TIME I let SSL idle for a bit, which is super inconvenient. Any ideas on that?

That's another known issue with Leopard (regardless of version)
On Both OSX Leopard (OS X 10.5) and Windows Vista there are known issues with Scratch LIVE when the computer goes to sleep.
Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard): If your computer enters Sleep mode with Scratch LIVE running and the hardware connected, on wake turntable input and audio output may not work. If your Scratch LIVE hardware is plugged in Scratch LIVE may become unresponsive and require a forced exit. To recover, you should unplug and replug your Scratch LIVE hardware without the Scratch LIVE running, before starting the application again. If the problem persists you should restart your computer.
Workaround: Disconnect your Scratch LIVE hardware before allowing your computer to enter Sleep mode.
If you are planning on using Scratch LIVE on either of these platforms we suggest setting your sleep timeout to "Never". You can normally make this setting apply only to AC powered mode, to preserve battery life when you aren't plugged into AC power or using Scratch LIVE.
On OSX this is done through "System Preferences >> Energy Saver"

Check System Preferences/Energy Saver, and make sure the option to "put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" is un-checked. Set the other two sleep options to "never".

i did the update to 10.5.2 last week and at my gig sat it was a dropout every few songs..
I adjusted the settings and still dropouts..
I had no idea there was a problem with it or i wouldnt have did the upgrade.I check my log and i had 1 dropout before
the update and 524 after the update.
Needless to say i downgraded to 10.5.1 and have had no problems so far.

When I used the usb port right next to my firewire 400 I had massive dropouts. I use the usb port next to the mag safe adapter and I have no problems. Here is what I am running.

I have only ever had two problems with Serato. When I upgraded to Leopard my mac would freeze if Serato was open and my computer went to sleep. Turn off sleep mode problem fixed. When I updated to 10.52 massive audio dropouts. Going back in time machine aint gonna fix it kids. Sticking in the original Leopard Disc and doing an archive and install is the answer. It saved my bacon. If you are using 10.5.2 and you have noticed a dropout get the hell out there and go back to 10.5 and life will be all sweet again. Have a nice day y`all.

I have a 10 month old mac book. I have just upgraded to Leopard (10.5.1) and am running 1.80 serato. I have also just purchased an apple time capsule. As I was about to install the capsule, I noticed that I need to install leopard 10.5.2 first... I have not upgraded YET....
SSL is more important to me than the capsule at the moment, but I still need to back up my shiznitz...
To other users, is anyone else the same boat as me, ie setup wise?
To serato people, Is it likely that Apple will work with you guys to ascertain compatability on the next release!?!?

I've got almost the same machine (a 2GHz 2,1 model with 2GB of memory) and I had horrible dropouts all over the place when I upgraded to 10.5.2, no matter what the buffer setting.
I reinstalled 10.5 and then updated to 10.5.1, and I haven't had a single dropout since (buffer set to 3)

You definitely have one of the MacBook hardware versions that's likely to have problems with 10.5.2. I would hold off. 10.5.3 is in beta, and shouldn't be too long.
As far as backups, why not just get an external firewire drive(s) and use either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner?

i just recently purchased ssl after trying it out on another set up. of course i'm having some issues.
-any dragging of a track i end up getting the wonderful mac busy spinning circle. i have to use the key board shortcut to load a track on to a deck
-if a track does load it either jumps in at a random spot in the track OR loads with out any audio and waveform
i just end up force quitting, re starting ssl and both cdj's. it starts to work again but starts acting up right away. i have already tried using the other usb port by the mag safe adapter, turning off airport and bluetooth, turning off the click feature on the track pad.
i'm running 10.5.2 which after reading all the posts doesn't work with ssl 1.8
the whole situation is like running vista... which is about as good as windows 98
looks like i'll stick to ableton for now until this is resolved.
i really hope 1.8.1 will do the trick!!!

Man this sounds like an old thread on PC problems with SSL. Not rubbing it in but My Serato will freeze on my PC as well, but the audio never drops out. never even skips. I am running an old buddy azz sony Vaio Mobile 1.86 with 2ghz of ram and using 2 external drives without the additional powersupply for my SSL box. maybe that would fix my lockups. but I hve NEVER lost audio when it locked. It eventually caught up with itself. Let's hope that Apple works this out since they are selling their products now in such large quantities that they are going to eventually run into the same problem PC's did... too big... to fast means yo azz is grass when it comes to compatibility.. not enough testing and too many variables since they introduced the Intel versions and are becoming more universal. Remember Macs that did nto ever have problems... wasnt that their selling point... just interested on what you guys think. I have a customer that has the same issue i will be dealing with today. any suggestions...

I've lost a lot of respect and faith in Rane because of the way they are handling the drop-out issue. No matter what we do, they won't acknowledge the issue and they constantly try to play-it-off like an Apple issue.
Don't believe me? Read this thread...

I am currently using a 1st generation MacBook, tomorrow I will be purchasing a new 2.4 GHz MacBook, I'll let you know if my problems persist. If they do I'm DONE with Serato, switching to Traktor.

did rane or apple come to any solutions yet because this is killing me....i load a song to my left deck...and it always seem to be the left deck, and it play for like 3 seconds and it go silent. No wave forms no nothing. This have never happen to me before....i actually didnt kno that i updated to 10.5.2. So im actually trying to figure out how long i had 10.5.2 and why is it just happening now. I thought i downloaded a bad file therefore i ran disk warrior on my laptop to try to get rid of any issues i have on my laptop...but i havent played since i did that so if it works i let u guys kno i guess but to be on the safe side i think im goin to just downgrade to 10.5

OH its official....this shit is really fuckin up. I just did a little test run on my serato and its still doing drop outs after i scan my macbook with my DiskWarrior program. I didnt have the serato hardware hook up to my equipment i was playing it off the laptop and i play like 10 songs until one song decided to have a drop out. This is what occurred, either the song play for like 13 seconds with waveforms and drop out or it played and no waveforms was shown and then drop out. Im really hoping that rane and/or apple come with an solution to this ASAP cuz this is really fuckin my flow up big time

Honestly Will, I would start making a back-up plan. As I've stated many times, there is no problem with Apple's machines, this is Rane's issue and they can't fix it.
I will be going to pick up my new MacBook in a couple hours, if Serato doesn't run correctly on my new machine then I am officially switching to Traktor! Bottom line.

That sounds more like the audio cache bug in 1.8 and is not related to 10.5.2. Set the audio cache setting to 60 and that *shouldn't* happen anymore (disappearing waveforms & no sound). See the known issue about this... scratchlive.net

Damn Will, that sucks!
I don't want to get banned from this forum, so I don't want to post any info, or endorse Traktor, but it is the alternative to Serato. I've have seen a few DJ's using it on Macs and they say it is problem free.
Worth researching.

Just got home with my new Macbook. I'm wanna start making the switch from my first generation Macbook to my new one tonight. If this doesn't fix the problem then bye-bye Serato!
By the way... I think my new Macbook will be 10.5.1 out the box, should I leave it that way? Or update to 10.5.2?

The issues with 10.5.2 are an Apple problem, not an SSL problem. Something has changed in 10.5.2, particularly with Airport. Therefore it is APPLE that need to fix the problem, not Serato. I'd had my Macbook since August 2006, and it's been flawless with SSL (I play 4+ hours every weekend). I've NEVER once even had a dropout in SSL (except if I plug the SL1 in the "bad" port, which has been a known issue since day 1, and hence I never plug it in the bad port, however, APPLE fixed that problem in Leopard and it's not longer an issue). The only problem I had with 10.5.2 is I got inaudible dropouts (only the USB light came on) when Airport was on and the buffer was set low (2), turn Airport off, problem solved. But you shouldn't be running SSL with Airport on in the first place anyway, but, this wasn't a problem with 10.5.1 for me. Therefore, it MUST be a 10.5.2 problem, not an SSL problem, as nothing has changed on my Macbook except 10.5.2.
And as some people mentioned, they are getting NO problems at all with 10.5.2, others are. Everyone has the same version of SSL, the only variable is the Macbook/OSX, and their music files. There's about 4 or 5 different revision of the Macbook now, 1st gens (which I have), Santa Rosa, Penn Rynn, etc. It's hard to say who's going to have problems and who will not. But, I agree, there shouldn't be any problems at all, but this is software, and there's no such thing as a problem free software, and this is the risk you take when DJ'ing with computers.
And there's several reasons dropouts can happen, it's not caused by one thing.
Getting another program (Traktor Crap, I mean, Scratch) isn't necessarily the solution. It has it's own set of problems as well, as I said, nothing is perfect. But it is your money, do with it as you want. But I will tell you this now, don't expect ANY support at all from Traktor/Native Instruments, and I hope you like paying for updates and bug fixes. I own Traktor Scratch, ScratchLIVE, and Torq. ScratchLIVE is ONLY one I will use live at a gigs, and that says a lot.

The 10.5.2 update is affecting several USB audio devices, not just Scratch LIVE.
Here's an example -->> Topic : Update 10.5.2 serious Audio problem -->> discussions.apple.com
Definitely sick with the 10.5.1 version and be sure to follow the basic rules:
There are only a few things that can cause dropouts on a Mac.
1. Airport card not turned off - most important (check every time you play)
2. Bluetooth not turned off
3. Your screen saver settings not being on 'never'. (this will cause drop outs when your screen saver tries to turn on)
4. Plugging into a bad port -->> www.scratchlive.net

Yes, definitely stick with 10.5.1 for now.
And in the future, generally it's best not to update as soon as Apple releases an update. Don't be the guinea pig, let someone else be it and test it out. Then wait for conformation, from multiple people/sources, that the update doesn't affect anything negatively. As the saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it (of course, things are "broke" now, so it does need fixing ;) ).

If it's actually a NEW (Penryn) MacBook, it will come with 10.5.2 like mine did over two months ago. And it will not support 10.5.1, so don't even bother trying to use that version.
I've had zero problems with SSL running with 10.5.2 on my current-generation MacBook. This is confirmed by viewing the dropout log...it's a list of 0's.
As I've said numerous times in the past (including earlier in this thread), most of the problems people are reporting with 10.5.2 seem to be with older machines that have been updated to 10.5.2.

stupid question... those with the 10.52 issues. Did they do a fresh install of leopard or did they upgrade from tiger? I am running the 2.16 macbook pro with 0 usb dropouts. I never turn off my wireless internet. I am running a USB buffer at 2 as well as 10.52 as the os. I maxed out the ram to 3gigs. I run the Lacie 1 TB external using firewire 800.

Go to Apple menu/About This Mac, and in the resulting box click the More Info button. That will bring up System Profiler. The first page of it will have something like this on the right side:
Model Name: Mac
Model Identifier: MacBook4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MB41.00C1.B00
SMC Version: 1.31f0
The "Model Identifier" is what tells you the "generation" of machine you have. 4,1 is the newest Penryn-based series.

I keep asking because you have never answered the question, so I thought I'd ask again instead of assuming you have everything configured correctly.
Are you using an external hard drive? If so, test your system without and see if the issue goes away.
How much ram does your Mac have installed? If using 1GB, I suggest adding another gig of ram.
Does increasing the USB audio buffer setting (to the right) have any affect?
Have you taken your Mac to Apple so they can check your system for problems? Apple should be aware of USB audio issues related to the 10.5 version of OSX, because it's been affecting all makes and models of USB devices -->> discussions.apple.com

when i first had the issue if i remember correctly....the usb audio buffer setting was to the right....
i even had this problem (song loaded, play for a few seconds and become silent even with wave forms showing)
when i didnt have the ssl hardware connected to my equipment....
and yes i do use a external hard drive....but thats where all my music is located so how could i use serato
without my external hard drive plugged in? im not going to have any music to play.
And yes i only have 1 GB and i always had 1GB and i never had a problem until NOW...so how is that an issue?
i dont have a million songs and a million files on my macbook....its not loaded with tones of programs
i basically use my laptop for the internet and for serato...and i never had a problem until now.

WTF!
I got a brand new penryn 2.6 laptop with 4 gigs of ram and a 7200rpm internal came running 10.5.2
I also have a Rane TTM 57SL. It doesn't work! the toggle switches don't work at all anymore. When I applied all the fixes suggested, the toggle switches now only do one thing - CUT OUT THE AUDIO! I can't even run video SL, Hell I can't use Serato in a pro situation at all. Thank god I had Traktor LE installed, cause I just got back from a gig and that's what I had to use for the past 3 weeks. works fine no hassles, no cue points or loops until I upgrade to Traktor 3 full version.
This is a shame I'm nearly $5,000 in the hole for this "State of the art" system. and I had 2 other DJ's ready to go Serato, No can do, I've recommended Traktor instead. This is what we do for a living, these problems are unacceptable. serato should have posted of sent an Urgent email to all registered users before this went down. I hope you are reading RANE/Serato, We have a national DJ company and I told 3 djs today NOT TO GET SERATO. There's too much at stake, namely paying the bills! Anybody wanna buy a TT57?

I wound up trashing everything, prefs, app, sytem extensions, Everything. Threw it all away incl video SL.
Did a clean new install of the latest 1.8.1 candidate No Video SL. Seems good now, a lot of work, though.
It would be difficult for a relatively new Mac user or someone not tech savvy to sort this out. An update or new install did not work, only after I located all files manually and trashed them did it work.
I appreciate all the various posts, it definitely helped me get up & running again

I have mac os 10.5.2 and i have found a solution to the usb dropouts. in addition to trying a different usb port, turning off bluetooth and airport and shutting off the screen saver, if you go to system preferences and change the sleep preferences to never (move the slider to the right to the word "never" for putting the computer and the computer's display to sleep) also make sure that you don't check "put the hard disks to sleep when possible". I found that this works.

The USB drop out in 10.5 is not the same as the USB drop out in 10.4: In OS X 10.4 the USB drop out was triggered by touching the mouse pad and/or using anything that used the USB platform, key board included, but would never cause the music to mute; yet, the USB drop out in OS X 10.5 has none of the trigers but when the USB drop out occurs the music is muted.

Hmm, nope. Got my 2.4 Penryn MBP in late February, got it home, turned it on, first thing I did was download SSL, plug in my external, and I was spinning in under 10 minutes.

Hotpoint... just to clarify.. the issue is something that Mac did to mess things up.
Not only does this screw with the SL1 but it also messed with other usb devices --> discussions.apple.com
The 10.5.3 OSX is suppose to fix what they screwed up.
Its not something that can be fixed or needed to be fixed on our end.

Looking very solid with SSL 1.8.1 here.
To back up what Zach said: Digidesign was waiting for 10.5.3 before updating/qualifying Pro Tools LE and M-Powered to work with Leopard. The problems with Leopard were Apple's to fix.

As of now 6-7 hours. Some of that with SSL doing auto-play at +49.99% with Keylock on, with songs playing on both decks. DropoutCount.log is showing no problems, audible or not (Serato added a nice extra bit of information to the logging in 1.8.1). Doing my first gig with the new OS/new SSL version tonight.
Definitely a good idea to make a backup of your boot drive first, so you can easily revert if you run into problems. YMMV...keep in mind I never had any problems with 10.5.2 either.

I have "time machine" backups, will they be sufficient with the Mac OSX discs?
I think i will leave it a week or two... Like you said, you had no probs with 10.5.2
Good luck with your gig bro (fingers crossed :P).

I don't know. I use SuperDuper, partly because it makes backups (of the startup drive) that can be directly booted from.
Waiting a week or two may be the best approach, if what you're using now is working well enough.

Yes, you can use your Leopard DVD to restore to a Time Machine backup of your entire system.

No problem, I only use Time Machine, I don't have Super Duper or any other backup software for Mac. I've had no troubles with Time Machine, it's simple and it does back up the system files as well as personal files so that if you need to restore from an OS update you can.
I have updated to 10.5.3 (I'm still running it now), it seems a little more stable overall than 10.5.2, and it did fix some USB dropout issues. The biggest flaw I've seen is that for some people (including myself) it takes noticeably longer to load tracks when using an external USB hard drive. We've been discussing it in this thread:
scratchlive.net
Other than that, it's been working perfectly.

ONly on the left deck, when a track is playing in INT mode and the i switch to REL or ABS....it changes to speed to 33/44 so it sounds like its slowed down. i have changed cables, cds,cd decks,reset-mixer/computer, rolled back to 1.8.0and tried reinstalling 1.8.1......no luck. this only happens on the left deck on the screen.....i have to dj for a new club in 1 hr and i don't have a working system. after i install 1.8.1 every thing worked for the first 4 hrs and then out of no where this started happening.

had drops out when i first updated my Mac 10.5 using 1.8 but i put 1.7.4 back in and everything worked good , UNTIL i updated to 10.5.3 now 1.7.4 has the same problems
as 1.8 including the drop outs and this loud noise like and idiot i didn't test 10.5.3 before i went to play so i had to wait til a song loaded 3sec.
I was told i had to go back to 10.5.2 so i have to do a downgrade unless some 1 knows a secret or can i upgrade to 1.8 now???

I reckon 1.8.1 will be fine... Its worth a try yeah? Make sure you rename your current SL version to "scratchlive 1.7.4." or something... That way you will keep both versions and you can go back to your old one if the new is worse!

I just got a brand new macbook pro... uploaded my lib. to the internal drive played one track on ssl ant at the end of the track that side froze... even after dropping another track it still showed the marker at the end of the track no matter what I did, even though it was getting the signal. So I tried the other deck... it did the same thing. My macbook came with 10.5.3 installed, and I downloaded ssl 1.8.1... Help!!!

Hi there,
I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard two months ago and I have noticed some problems with my MacBook Pro, that I didn't have before the new OS.
I'm running Serato 1.7.4 with 10.5.1 and everything works fine, but last saturday I was at a gig and played for an hour or so and everything ran smooth. After that, my colleague DJ arrived and played for another hour so I disconnected my Mac from the system and put it to sleep. When it was my turn again, the machine was frozen, nothing worked and I had to re-boot it the hard way, like a PC! Now I'm thinking it's a 10.5.1 issue but I don't want to upgrade neither SL nor OS since 1.8.1 is not supported by 10.5.3
I think I'm stickin' to 1.7.4 and 10.5.1 for a bit longer and bare with the frozen Mac issue while 10.5.3 is officially supported.
Any advice?

same problem here, just started happening.... my left turntable only (1200) seems to be pitching down the tracks??? I could play a 125 bpm @ pitch lock on both decks and they would not be the same... same goes when I have say a 130 bpm track on right TT and a 132 bpm on left TT, I'd have to have the pitch on the left @ maybe +6 just to match the slower bpm track on the right???!!!! certainly not as bad as audio dropouts (which I rarely but still get from time to time) but it's really tough to do do quick mixes when I can't get a proper bpm readout..recipe for disaster right there.
IDEAS PLEASE?!
