It is the truth. Had Serato since 1.63 had Intel Macbook 2.0 DC Processor and 2 gigs of ram for over a year. Recently even got the power supply for my serato box, and prior to 10.5.2, had all performance settings TO THE MAX including Hi-Fi Resampler on with absolutely NO USB DROPOUTS. After 10.5.2, no matter what I do, no matter how low my performance settings are, I get terrible USB Dropout, to the point of SILENCE in my sound for 1-3 seconds. PLEASE HELP!!!!

My drop outs stopped when I turned off airport and blue tooth...but the main problem I'm having is getting all my songs to load from itunes. First of all I cant use my external at all when I scan the tags it crashes immediately...Then when I try to go the internal HD route, serato will crash a couple times before it will scan the tags...even then I've noticed in the middle of gigs that songs will just disappear..I've got to switch to an ipod and re boot the program and they generally come back...am I doing something else wrong? is is not compatibility issues?

I just upgraded to 10.5 and stupidly let the software update upgrade me to 10.5.2. At a gig, the audio started dropping out on me for 1-2 seconds at a time, almost with every track i loaded in. I use a macbook 2ghz with 2 gigs of ram, control vinyl for my turntables, and a rane 56 mixer (if you serato guys need my system profile, you just let me know). I've never had any problem with audio drop out before this. I put all the settings on the lowest cpu load and it still continued to happen. I checked my activity monitor and the cpu was only running 30%-45%. I turned off wireless airport and bluetooth as always. The issue persists.
The problem would happen once per track loaded usually. I would load up the new track, adjust the pitch maybe, and cue it up. the drop out would most often occur on the two tracks playing simultaneously in a blend over the system. Sometimes it would occur before I played the next track over the master out, but mostly it would drop out both during a blend (the last time you'd want it to happen :/ ).
I'm guessing I should downgrade to 10.5.1? 10.5? How far away is this fix? Please help, as I simply cannot go through that again with the drop outs. Those dancers might be drunk, but they're not THAT drunk.

I'm new to this board and I'm also concerned over this. I just got SSL and downloaded version 1.8 about 2 weeks ago and I'm running it from a Macbook 2.2Ghz, 4GB RAM, 120GB HD with Leopard 10.5.2. I have an external HD plugged in with about 200 songs (.m4a/AAC format). It's not my official library by any means but I just use this to mess around with at home for the time being (I have a friend who's ripping my CD library for me). I'm fortunate to not experience any USB dropouts (yet) but my concern is screen freezing. I normally just start up the Macbook (with the hardware connected), launch SSL and click on Import and select the folder called "AAC music" from my external drive. I then drag and drop then entire folder to the crate area (left side). It scans all the tracks and then I proceed. I drag and drop a track to left deck, drop the needle and play the track. Then I select another track for the right deck. This is where the freezing occurs and what kills me is that I cannot re-create this problem at will. Sometimes it freezes, sometimes it doesn't. I know it's not just the right deck, it could be either. When the screen freezes, the music continues to play (sometimes right before the screen freezes, the track that I select to drag and drop to the empty deck actual does get there as I can still hear it when I queue it up in my headphones). I have not built any overviews yet...could this be my issue? Could it be the music format (AAC)? Is it because of the external drive? I have not played out with it yet but I'm scared that if this issue persists, I simply can use it to play live. Any help would be greatly appreciated for this noob. :o)
Cheers!

Since some people reading this thread may miss this from other conversations about 10.5.2:
It seems that 10.5.2 is working well for people who bought new Macs that came with 10.5.2 pre-installed (and on the included OS installer discs). I have one of the new MacBooks with 10.5.2, and have not had *any* dropouts (or any other problems with SSL) in several weeks of use during my 5-hour gigs). My DropoutCount.log (in ~/Music/ScratchLIVE) shows "0" for every regular set I've played, in fact.
I've also seen 10.5.2 working well on previous-generation MacBooks that use the "Santa Rosa" chipset (the revision of MacBook that was produced between November 2007 and February 2008). (That was the first MacBook model that allowed use of 4gb RAM, and changed USB port assignments so that none of the external USB connections are shared with the keyboard/trackpad, as was the case on the older MacBooks).
From the information I've seen here and elsewhere, the problems with 10.5.2 are mostly affecting people with older versions of the MacBook and MacBook Pro (the versions prior to Apple adopting the Santa Rosa chipset for these computers).

I used to have this problem. I use a first-generation Macbook 2.0GHz Core Duo, 1 GB RAM, came with Tiger but upgraded to 10.5 Leopard and Software Update to upgrade to 10.5.2.
I had dropouts every gig, regardless of Airport or Bluetooth being on or off, or which port the SL1 was plugged into. Dropouts occurred every 5-10 minutes.
MY SOLUTION -- after doing the update for Garageband (sorry can't remember the version number, but just update Garageband to the latest version), and always plugging the SL1 into the USB port closest to the trackpad, I no longer have dropouts. Not one.
Hope that helps some of you!

You gain performance by having matched RAM in the slots, and 2gb RAM is really cheap.

I have also seen cases where simply downloading a Combo Update and running it (even when it's the same OS version currently installed) fixes problems.
It's hard to know for sure about some of this stuff, since Apple is not terribly detailed in its release notes about software updates.

Part of the "legitimate solution" is to simply calm down (and start your own thread with some very detailed information about your setup). Getting all worked up interferes with the kind of logical troubleshooting that needs to be done. And whatever problem(s) there might be with OS 10.5.2 probably aren't Serato's to fix...it seems most likely it's some change that Apple made that negatively affected certain hardware revisions.
I've now had a new MacBook for a month (the newest hardware version), running 10.5.2 with SSL 1.8.0, and it's given me no problems whatsoever. Not a single dropout in regular use, and I've used it a lot. I mention this (again) to point out that there are a number of people with NO PROBLEMS from OS 10.5.2. So blaming Serato seems inaccurate, as well as not helping you fix whatever issue you're having.

Thanks for the info...what you have is actually not a "new" MacBook, it's the very first MacBook hardware version from 2006. Those seem to be the ones having the most trouble with 10.5.2.
The solution seems to be reinstalling 10.5.1 (or 10.4.11, which also seems to work fine). Either way, it requires a complete OS reinstall...there's no way to "roll back" from a later version.

When I click on the waveform I get nothing, and it won't play in internal either. When I go to exit at that point to restart, I just get a rainbow wheel and have to force quit because it's not responding. This happens EVERY TIME I let SSL idle for a bit, which is super inconvenient. Any ideas on that?

That's another known issue with Leopard (regardless of version)
On Both OSX Leopard (OS X 10.5) and Windows Vista there are known issues with Scratch LIVE when the computer goes to sleep.
Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard): If your computer enters Sleep mode with Scratch LIVE running and the hardware connected, on wake turntable input and audio output may not work. If your Scratch LIVE hardware is plugged in Scratch LIVE may become unresponsive and require a forced exit. To recover, you should unplug and replug your Scratch LIVE hardware without the Scratch LIVE running, before starting the application again. If the problem persists you should restart your computer.
Workaround: Disconnect your Scratch LIVE hardware before allowing your computer to enter Sleep mode.
If you are planning on using Scratch LIVE on either of these platforms we suggest setting your sleep timeout to "Never". You can normally make this setting apply only to AC powered mode, to preserve battery life when you aren't plugged into AC power or using Scratch LIVE.
On OSX this is done through "System Preferences >> Energy Saver"

I have only ever had two problems with Serato. When I upgraded to Leopard my mac would freeze if Serato was open and my computer went to sleep. Turn off sleep mode problem fixed. When I updated to 10.52 massive audio dropouts. Going back in time machine aint gonna fix it kids. Sticking in the original Leopard Disc and doing an archive and install is the answer. It saved my bacon. If you are using 10.5.2 and you have noticed a dropout get the hell out there and go back to 10.5 and life will be all sweet again. Have a nice day y`all.

Hey boys and girls....
I have a 10 month old mac book. I have just upgraded to Leopard (10.5.1) and am running 1.80 serato. I have also just purchased an apple time capsule. As I was about to install the capsule, I noticed that I need to install leopard 10.5.2 first... I have not upgraded YET....
SSL is more important to me than the capsule at the moment, but I still need to back up my shiznitz...
To other users, is anyone else the same boat as me, ie setup wise?
To serato people, Is it likely that Apple will work with you guys to ascertain compatability on the next release!?!?

I've got almost the same machine (a 2GHz 2,1 model with 2GB of memory) and I had horrible dropouts all over the place when I upgraded to 10.5.2, no matter what the buffer setting.
I reinstalled 10.5 and then updated to 10.5.1, and I haven't had a single dropout since (buffer set to 3)

You definitely have one of the MacBook hardware versions that's likely to have problems with 10.5.2. I would hold off. 10.5.3 is in beta, and shouldn't be too long.
As far as backups, why not just get an external firewire drive(s) and use either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner?

i just recently purchased ssl after trying it out on another set up. of course i'm having some issues.
-any dragging of a track i end up getting the wonderful mac busy spinning circle. i have to use the key board shortcut to load a track on to a deck
-if a track does load it either jumps in at a random spot in the track OR loads with out any audio and waveform
i just end up force quitting, re starting ssl and both cdj's. it starts to work again but starts acting up right away. i have already tried using the other usb port by the mag safe adapter, turning off airport and bluetooth, turning off the click feature on the track pad.
i'm running 10.5.2 which after reading all the posts doesn't work with ssl 1.8
the whole situation is like running vista... which is about as good as windows 98
looks like i'll stick to ableton for now until this is resolved.
i really hope 1.8.1 will do the trick!!!
