When someone's giving you something for free no need to dis them. If I went into a record shop and wanted one out of seven things played to me that would be a fair average. So, one tune out of seven for free looks like a good thing to me.

My cup is half full......

Yep :) That's planned, but a way off because we have a lot of record label stuff to do first.

Interesting. However, the world of Promo doesn't work that way. It could be more than months before a track "expires" or happens to be a hit. Do you know the meaning of "sleepers"? I don't think putting a time limit is in the best interest of the labels. Besides, once it's out. It's out. It has spread like herpes and there's nothing you can do to stop it.

Also, it might be worth tracking down DJ Marky and see if he'll give a release or remix.
I saw him last week at One Nation 'Clash of the Titans' at Brixton Academy. I know he's on your list of 'DJ's who use Serato Scratch', but actually seeing him plug in Serato Scratch and do a set was awesome!
Considering D&B can be quite an elitist vinyl genre, it was good seeing a top D&B dj use digital. Gives me hope... ;P

I see Serato is one of the sponsors for the 'Sun and Bass' event. It might be worth using the opportunity of close proximity with D&B dj's to see if they'll be keen in getting involved.
Also, any perks for owners of Serato Scratch when going to events sponsored by Serato? ;P

Scratch LIVE 1.7.4 RC 2 deals with them well, the problem is our Whitelabel file encoder.

The record label uploaded mono files for that and our encoder didn't deal with it well.

We've fixed the encoder already but we have had to remove that release until we get stereo source files.

Me.. being a pro DJ (in the sense that DJing is what I do for a living) LIKE the WhiteLabel service. I dont consider it DRM in the sense that I CAN still play them in other apps.... but the only app that i will use them live in is SSL. So speak for yourself with that comment.

I must admit we were already talking to them when you wrote this, I just wanted to look cool ;)

there are two things you can do to help us to get more labels on board - 1) provide feedback for the releases that we're currently putting out (over here: beta.whitelabel.net ) and 2) if you have contact with labels, even if it's just via their info@ address or web forum, let them know that you want them to check out whitelabel.net ... if they know there is demand, they'll be a lot more receptive when we call.

They don't know us?!?!?

Let me clarify my statement.

I didn't mean that a record label will not know anyone here, but it is unlikely that they will know every Scratch LIVE DJ personally.

So, what is the answer to your question? Do you know the promo people at the record labels you want promos from? If we were to deliver non-DRM mp3s, Whitelabel.net would probably work the same way as has done for years.. if you have a good relationship with the record label you'll be on their list, and you'll receive their promos.

Record labels already have the ability to send to a particular list of DJs, and as I've been saying, I think that feature would be used most of the time if they were to deliver non-DRM files.

it's a standard thing in reggae and has been going on for years. A lot of artists utilize the same instrumental or "riddim" and the DJs will cut between like 4 or 5 songs with the same riddim.

Mark Ronson's label Allido Records presents Wale - Nike Boots:

We've already got a connection with Company Flow when El-P signed up Definitive Jux. Now Mr Len from Company Flow has signed up his label, Smacks Records.

Smacks Records has something special for you – 30 records in 30 weeks! We're a bit behind schedule so this week we'll be giving you 7 records in 7 days to catch up. First up is Bully Mouth - Lemonade:
beta.whitelabel.net

Here's the press release for their 30 in 30 campaign.
For more information visit smacksrecords.blogspot.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, October 29, 2007

Smacks Records, the label founded by Mr. Len (DJ/Producer of Company Flow, Jean Grae, formerly of Rawkus Records and Matador Records), is kicking off an unheard of new campaign for its upcoming releases. Starting November 7th and every Wednesday after that for 30 Weeks, Smacks Records will release a new song from its roster of artists. That's right- 30 songs in 30 weeks.

Smacks Artists include: Kice of Course, Mental Case a.k.a. Sal Diesel, BullyMouth, Roosevelt Franklin, Eff Radio, and Mr. Len. Collaborations with El Da Sensei, I-n-I and Lord Sear are also in the works. AMALGAMDIGITAL.com, known for re-releasing the Kurious album and putting out the sophomore Juggaknots album "You're Your Confusion", will host the weekly releases on-line.

And if that is not enough, SMACKSRECORDS.BLOGSPOT.com has been established to give fans insight into the songs straight from the artist's mouth (or mind and fingers).

The most asked question is, "how will people hear it?" All you need to do is turn on your XM receiver and listen to Spitkicker Radio and the soon-to-come Dummy Smacks Hour on The Rhyme 65 every week. Tune in as Mr. Len cuts it up for the kiddies!

Yo dave, if you could re-label the Gangsta Rap - House Shoes to (explicit/dirty) that might save some confusion. It's labeled as (Radio) and it is most def NOT the radio version. I had downloaded it and was pre-listening to it before my gig when I heard all the swear words.

Glad I checked it before actually playing it.

just wanted to say some of the releases lately have been pretty good. Original stuff most people wouldn't normally hear in a club.

I would however like to see more releases each week. Seems like WL gets about 2 to 3 releases a week which really isn't very much, especially if the releases aren't very good. A solid release pack (maybe 5 or more?) every wed or thurs (right before the weekend) with a handful of promos would be ideal imo. I'm probably just gettin greedy though :P

btw, is there a section for suggestions regarding the layout of Serato's Whitelabel format?

- is there a way to navigate and preview/download by genre?

- also, is there a way to have an area to the side that contains links to other artists/songs that are similar or what other members have liked as well (kinda like what iTunes does)

Good question, no we don't have a Whitelabel feature suggestions area. But anywhere is fine, we're watching ;)

Quote:

We don't have a dedicated genre browse, but you can type "Funk" into the search to browse all funk releases

Sup Brigid.

I noticed more and more lately that some of the newer tracks don't have a "preview" to listen to them before download, and I'm noticing more not being tagged dirty / clean / radio.

This just how to get the tracks from the studios? No preview = no download.
At 1:55 AM 25 August 2008
DJ Prinvale` wrote
Hey Prinvale,

All of the tracks should have previews next to them - can you see the play icon next to the download icon? Do you click on it and nothing happens?
At 2:07 AM 25 August 2008
Brigid wrote

Serato, Moderator
they are showing up now. A few days ago I could see the download icon but not the preview icon. Probably a browser issu (FF 3), but it's happened more then once.
At 3:07 AM 25 August 2008
DJ Prinvale` wrote
Thanks Prinvale. The previews should be there for all releases. Sometimes they are a bit slow to show up, and sometime they fail to play. We're looking at ways to fix them.
