When someone's giving you something for free no need to dis them. If I went into a record shop and wanted one out of seven things played to me that would be a fair average. So, one tune out of seven for free looks like a good thing to me.

Yep, that's right. Some are choosing to try out Whitelabel.net to reach new markets, some have almost given up on making money out of selling music altogether and simply want to get their music out there to enable them to do more gigs (where the real money is...)

Interesting. However, the world of Promo doesn't work that way. It could be more than months before a track "expires" or happens to be a hit. Do you know the meaning of "sleepers"? I don't think putting a time limit is in the best interest of the labels. Besides, once it's out. It's out. It has spread like herpes and there's nothing you can do to stop it.

Also, it might be worth tracking down DJ Marky and see if he'll give a release or remix.
I saw him last week at One Nation 'Clash of the Titans' at Brixton Academy. I know he's on your list of 'DJ's who use Serato Scratch', but actually seeing him plug in Serato Scratch and do a set was awesome!
Considering D&B can be quite an elitist vinyl genre, it was good seeing a top D&B dj use digital. Gives me hope... ;P

Scratch LIVE 1.7.4 RC 2 deals with them well, the problem is our Whitelabel file encoder.

The record label uploaded mono files for that and our encoder didn't deal with it well.

We've fixed the encoder already but we have had to remove that release until we get stereo source files.

Me.. being a pro DJ (in the sense that DJing is what I do for a living) LIKE the WhiteLabel service. I dont consider it DRM in the sense that I CAN still play them in other apps.... but the only app that i will use them live in is SSL. So speak for yourself with that comment.

I must admit we were already talking to them when you wrote this, I just wanted to look cool ;)

there are two things you can do to help us to get more labels on board - 1) provide feedback for the releases that we're currently putting out (over here: beta.whitelabel.net ) and 2) if you have contact with labels, even if it's just via their info@ address or web forum, let them know that you want them to check out whitelabel.net ... if they know there is demand, they'll be a lot more receptive when we call.

I didn't mean that a record label will not know anyone here, but it is unlikely that they will know every Scratch LIVE DJ personally.

So, what is the answer to your question? Do you know the promo people at the record labels you want promos from? If we were to deliver non-DRM mp3s, Whitelabel.net would probably work the same way as has done for years.. if you have a good relationship with the record label you'll be on their list, and you'll receive their promos.

Record labels already have the ability to send to a particular list of DJs, and as I've been saying, I think that feature would be used most of the time if they were to deliver non-DRM files.

It has since been part of the culture of reggae/dancehall where different artists record different songs using the same instrumental

no it started wit the "Selector" (the dj). then the DeeJay's (the party pumper/rapper/vocalist) would do his/her thing over the selectors riddim when one of the "Sound Systems" came around (the big names Selectors had their own TRAVELING sound systems that when set up made an outdoor club for the area they set up in. the Selectors NAMED their sound systems and thats how people knew what party was going on by the sound system names

just wanted to say some of the releases lately have been pretty good. Original stuff most people wouldn't normally hear in a club.

I would however like to see more releases each week. Seems like WL gets about 2 to 3 releases a week which really isn't very much, especially if the releases aren't very good. A solid release pack (maybe 5 or more?) every wed or thurs (right before the weekend) with a handful of promos would be ideal imo. I'm probably just gettin greedy though :P

Good question, no we don't have a Whitelabel feature suggestions area. But anywhere is fine, we're watching ;)

What version of IE are you using KDJSO?

I tested the preview player in both IE6 and IE7 and works well.

First of all you MUST have javascript enabled. The preview player won't work without it.

IE7, by default, will prevent all pop-up windows from opening (even if they're opening a page from the same domain - very clever).

In this situation you'll see a yellow bar across the top of the web page saying that a pop-up window was blocked. You can click on this yellow bar and select from a couple of different options. You should select the option that says something like "Always allow pop-ups for this domain".

Selecting this option will reload the page. From here you should be able to open the preview player.

Let me know if this doesn't solve your problem.

Do you have any 3rd party applications or extensions that could be blocking the pop-up?

Some browser tool bars include pop-up blockers. The Google toolbar for example has a pop-up blocker.

Some anti-virus software also installs some "browser security" tools which, amongst other things, blocks pop-ups.

I need to kick myself, I haven't been to whitelabel in a minute and there was a bunch of songs I needed to download, so I downloaded a bunch of Whitelabel joints in between getting joints from my pool. Majors should be paying Serato to promote their music. Serato is the industry standard and this is a good way to get artists out to the public. There were some wack artists, but a whole hell of a lot of Good artists I never heard of, or haven't heard from in a while. I just wish they gave whitelabel more clean edits. The spot I dJ at won't let me play dirty versions and you can't play dirty versions on the radio or public events anyway

can't play dirty versions at nightclubs in my area. Liquor Commissioners can fine you and possibly confiscate something. happened to a fellow dj. they took away his record. yes, apparently it's in their jurisdiction to do so. kinda wondering what they would do with a ssl user...confiscate the hd/lappy? or demand that we delete the file?

You don't need a moderator for that you need to read a little more. The files are at their best in scratchlive when played on any other played they play at those rediculous bit rates. The files are 320kbs when played in serato with the SL plugged in.

Pretty cool that Atlantic is servicing Whitelabel, now some recent and classic Club Bangers in there, it's also making me look back at a few of those that I already had but overlooked. Looking forward to more cuts from them in 2009.

Nice.. Been supporting WL.net for ages, ticked all the boxes in my profile, play clubs and radio.. Seems i'm not good enough for "ultras" ultra OLD promos lol.. As for "the drip drop song" I STOPPED playing the "cut full" mix last summer.. Promo? Er no..

Disappointed to find i am not considered eligible for promos i already had.. Looks like i'm gonna miss the boat on all the good stuff cos i aint even on the shit stuff..

Think i'll stick to the services that look after me if this going to become the norm..

Sorry MK 1 - I should have mentioned Ultra only have rights to send their releases to North America. We are working with Ultra to get worldwide distribution, at which point you'll be on the list.

The drip drop song is the first release from Robbins so I guess they wanted to start with something older. Can you please leave some feedback there for the label to tell them that you need promos? That would be much appreciated!

Yes, that would be great.

Note that most (probably over 90%) of the releases on Whitelabel are delivered worldwide to everyone.

Also note that it's not Serato's / Whitelabel's choice who gets access to each release, and in some cases it's not really the record label's choice either. Some want to send worldwide but simply can't because they don't have worldwide clearance. Serato isn't going to stop them from using Whitelabel simply because some releases have restricted access.

Anyway, I have a feeling of deja vu... from a few months back...

No Deja Vu... I just think (in this case) people should voice their opinions about what they don't like. I am not blaming you [Serato], but hopefully some recordlabel will read this and overthink their strategy. The more people complain the higher the chances that at some point there will be a change. I am not giving up the hope :)

it's so interesting. Yeah I'm not hitting the top clubs every week but every event I do is 300+ people, mostly kids 25 and under. You would think they would see that and say, "That's Eminems Market, give the music to this guy too."

Not that I'm complaining - I think labels need to open up their eyes a little bit more and realize that there are some great and successful DJs that don't do radio or clubs for a living.

Not to mention, have you been to a club lately? Eminem is not what clubs DJs are playing, unless it's a house remix. My market actually makes more sense.

I remember one time we had to throw away two skids of about 10,000 sampler cd's because the record label first cleared a single, and then changed their minds after all the materials were printed, and cd's were replicated because of clearance issues.

with so much coming out, its hard to grab it all... but with limited time of availability, its hard to be selective. it would be a huge help to know when you take down releases... maybe a 2-week notice or something? i'd opt-in to that.

Same concept here;
If you check out a track and not download it, then wait for someone else to tell you that the shit is bangin', then you go back to WL to see that it has expired, and you realize that you were sleeping, then you would learn never to be a slipping sleeper ever again.

SMH @ 2 weeks notice. GTFOH with that.
Does it take two weeks to figure out if you want to download a free track?
