Ah yeah! Tribute to DJ AM

djanthonyd 8:50 PM - 2 September, 2010
Worked on this mix for a little over a month. Did about 3 weeks worth of research on AM's mixes and youtube videos to get a fair amount samples and vocals to mash up. My First time integrating both Ableton live and Scratch live. Hope you guys enjoy!

Im glad i know about this now....it used to drive me INSANE when i was just getting into all this shit cause id listen to a mix like this and try to duplicate it and nevr could figure out how they switched shit on and out so damn fast
djsatony 9:43 PM - 3 September, 2010
I still dont fully understand how it works. How does he do all this without using mash ups??

how does multi trackin work
geeunot 7:22 PM - 4 September, 2010
^Recording a segment of a mix then hitting stop. Then going back over it, layering more elements like scratching. Then stop, and do that over again throughout the whole mix. A lot of mixes are made this way now. People use ableton to do this i.e. audio1.
djchrischip 7:31 PM - 4 September, 2010
so doin lik 1 take mix cds is a thing of the past?
smh

geeunot 7:33 PM - 4 September, 2010
i still do one take ones...I wouldnt say it's a thing of the past more...multitracking just gives people more options. I wouldn't submit a multitracked CD a demo though, for obvious reasons...

WOW!! He really did pull that off. Props, that's a super hard routine. Ive been tryin to the "backbeat" part. Super hard..haha. Ok so what's the breakbeat he uses on wonderwall? I know, it's not umbrella, and it sounds like walk this way slowed down.
djchrischip 7:35 PM - 4 September, 2010
yea lik i feel lik its not fair... im sure u give me 222 chances to do a mix i get it right eventually

SuckaDJ 7:37 PM - 4 September, 2010
honestly, i find it more fun to listen to nowadays (multi-tracked)

just listen to one of scenes OH EM GEE
a DJ 11:19 PM - 4 September, 2010
I agree, I like to listen to multi tracked mixes too. I love listening to Spinbad mixes, and he made those multi track mixes way back in the day before Serato. I agree with Bezzle though, when you're first starting out, or when it's not too clear, you're like how the hell did they do that? As you go along you get a better idea of what's possible single track or what needs to be done multi tracked, even though with Serato a lot more is possible now.

As far as the DJ AM break beat for wonderwall, there's so many threads about it. Please search it.
DJ Ritmo 12:19 AM - 5 September, 2010
damn this makes mix make me feel like Im not learning fast enough. It was sick as hell the greatest I heard so far my ma dude
geeunot 1:37 AM - 5 September, 2010

i think i replicated two or three mash ups he plays in a few videos. I thought it'd be fun to just brainstorm from mixes/videos and pick out samples to create something original.

This was dope and makes you appreciate AM even more. The fact that he did this live is LIVE is pretty ridiculous when u think about it.
nik39 8:54 PM - 24 February, 2011
djanthonyd, can you explain how you used Ableton here? I assume you didn't mix this all live, did you?
nik39 8:54 PM - 24 February, 2011
I mean in one take.
orchardlounge 9:24 PM - 24 February, 2011
i really enjoyed this. many thanks, man.

Definitely not all in one take.. used an external sound card and layered different pieces in different channels in ableton (arrangement view) using metronome and adjusted the pitch on each song accordingly. Even though i knew AM's style was all about live performances, i figured something clean enough (even if recorded) would do justice :)
Did about a month of research and listened to pretty much everything there is on the internet about AM, from youtube videos to mixes to interviews and got to work.. I pieced up what i thought he played on a frequent basis to pay homage, but flipped it at the same time to keep it original.. So everything you hear in there has come out of AM's Serato sometime in his lifetime lol.
The last piece of the mix which is the wonderwall routine was done live.

Thanks for all the feedback!
djchrischip 6:24 AM - 25 February, 2011
