So my alarm wakes me up (radio)
I hear this song. I was like "shit this is hot!"
Hot beat, one of my fave rapper's on the cut, girl sounds nice.
So I look up the song (remembered some lyrics)...found it.
Wanna hear it...Here it goes.
Watchwww.youtube.com
WTF!
It sounds good but should I be upset of the EPIC sellout-izm? Or give them all props?

Are you guys actually surprised by this in 2010? Seriously... if it was 1994 I could understand the shock, but I think you all need to wave the blunt smoke from in front of your face and lift the camoflague skully from off your brow and out of your eyeline.... take a look at the world around you. "Keepin' it real" died about 20 years ago, they buried him somewhere in the back. A couple of kids with backpacks and spray cans still hold a candlelight vigil by his grave but nobody really pays attention to them.

We wont be the only one that are surprised by this guaranteed. If you wanna support it by all means go ahead, if you wanna put this song number 1 in your chart list go ahead bruv, im just stating what i think of the song. Its not about "Keepin it real" its about my opinion whether i like it or not and if you like it thats your opiniom,
Dj Shamann
12:24 AM - 2 September, 2010
Who said I want to support it? You may have "stated what you thought of the song" but I didn't, but you still assumed what I play or what side I am on because I speak the truth and it's a truth that you don't like. Personally think it sucks. I saw this record in the pool, SMH and kept it moving because this is neither the first or last time a rapper has collabed with someone that is "below" what idealistic fans expect of them.
But the reality is...rappers are whores, plain and simple. They'll put their verse on any random kids mixtape for the right amount of change, they've been jumping on R&B and pop records for near two decades now, your buddy Raekwon (who happens to be one of my all time fav's) included. Is this the verse time you've heard of this type of shit? No wonder you're surprised, but others who have not had their head buried in the sand since 1993 won't be so shocked.

And LOL I mean shit, I shrugged the song off and blocked it from my mind and here you are posting it to your Facebook and you're talking about what I put in my charts? LOL.
If it ends up on anybody's charts it will be through no contribution of my own, but if you want to help spread the word through viral marketing go ahead, Justin thanks you.

But is it wrong? I think the song sounds good!
What's bugging me is that what I thought was a girl turned out to be J.B.
That shouldn't make the song sound "less good"
A rapper being a whore doesn't kill me as much as the BEAT that was used.
Wu Tang's ANTHEM BEAT! --> Watchwww.youtube.com Say it isn't soooo!

There's nothing "new" about that song. Kanye (I assume) basically used Wu-Tangs beat just because Raekwon is on it. Him rapping on it sounds OK. Kanye rapping on it sounds OK. But, Justin Beaver (lol) sounds horrible. It kills whatever little the song had.

I think the song sucks balls. The classic W.T.C.A.N.T.F.W sample with Justin Biebers cheesy girl vocals just doesnt fit. Then Kanye's wack and annoying flow pops up. Raekwon might have got some cash for this track but c'mon, ITS JUSTIN BIEBER. I hear peoples points about keepin it real being dead but I disagree. Its not about keeping it real but surely you should have a degree of artistic integrity and a sense of loyalty towards your fans. I will never be able to listen to Wu Tang Clan Aint... without hearing that little kids voice again...Oh my, thats a terrible thought.

Who cares about the keepin it real factor, if you like the song play it, if you dont fuck it. If you just like raes verse than be a dj and just play his verse. As far as im concerned if your a fan of Raekwon then him doin a track with the hottest thing in an under 18 music listeners life is a good thing. Your NOT gonna be able to just feed them the medicine of what we think is good so why not put the pill in apple sauce and feed it to them so they dont realise their learning. You never know the 10 to 17 demographic that adores beiber may here Raekwon and lead them to look more into some classi ish.

DJ Alkemy
2:54 PM - 2 September, 2010
Or maybe he should do a track with the latest flavor of the month and lose a LOT of his hardcore followers along the way. And when he wants to get real in the studio again next time he might not sell as many records as he would like. There is another side of the coin.

If someone stops listening to him because he did ONE track with someone THEY dont deem appropriate for HIM then their not a "hardcore follower", the way hes been doing things has given him 2 gold albums in 15 years, obviously thats not workin well so mabye doing something with a flavor will acutually expose him to more people than just the core "i wish it was 98 sooo bad" crowd and help him get some spotlight

If Raekwon has done that track to expose himself to a wider audience then I am actually the 3rd gunner on the grassy knoll. He done it for $$, nothing more nothing less.

Yes it is a quality track, that's why I'm glad he does those from time to time. But at that time though we were just coming out of the New Jack Swing era and it wasn't as acceptable for a "hardcore" rapper to be jumping on joints like that. Allure, Mya etc... ODB doing joints with MC, (and again) Mya and Pras.. There were very few rappers that could get away with it. This is not the end of Rae, trust me on that.
There are some good, and there are some bad. I choose to recognize the good ones, the others are of little relevance.

If your main goal is to keep it real and spit mad lyrical unfiltered game then get a job at walmart and join the freestyle cypher in the break room between shifts
So narrow minded. You are steeped in the commercial side of music and hey, good luck to you but you will never be able to understand the sheer horror of finding out a rapper you respect has done a track like this.

It just shocks me how many people on this board are shocked and suprised that rappers are in this game to make money...will this song help or hurt his image who knows, will it have longevity ...nope...is it quality, depends on your tastes....will it sell a SHIT TON of records and make both of them a nice chunk of change..YESThis is a busniess, the goal of a busniess is to make money\make a living. I know you weren't Djing back then. but do you remember when Timbo and JT first linked up. People were screaming blue murder about Timbo doing tracks with that "NSync faggot" (LOL even though Timbo has always been a pop producer)... fast forward 10 years and nobody seems quite as concerned.
Yup i remember that and it turned out well in the end...i think more artists need to come out the box\out their comfort zones and experiment more

Not at all, im not even particulary fond of it and none of my fave rappers\albums are commercially viable. That said im not totally closed minded about it and im not going to freak out because an artist makes a song that appeals to the commercial side of music. Theres room in the world for an articitc lyrical street corner rapper as well as a bubble gum 1 hit wonder manufactured star

Hip-Hop has always been about bragging rights and being the best. You wouldnt know this. So yes, when bow wow and the like submit their work as Hip-Hop expect to get trashed if it aint up to par. same as any Hip-Hop producer, graf writer, b-boy & dj expects. He realises he aint got the skills as such so he sits in that little pigeonhole between hip-hop and pop music, good luck to him. And I been a fan of the culture since I was 12 and bought thousands worth of music, attended concerts etc etc so I think I have the right to be critical if I dont think a certain artist is due credit. And label Hip-Hop a subgenre?...Bezzle...again, with Hip-Hop, you are out of your depth...stick to that little pigeonhole I spoke about earlier.

It means I spent years digging around dusty old record shops coming across gems from ALL sorts of genres. So your little comment about more music out there than just hip-hop and pop is moot.
You would be suprised at how much music has got lost with all the mp3 business, dont be a fool.

I listen to every new song i get regardless of artist or genre and decide
A) If I like it
B) If a crowd would like it
and use it accordingly, i dont look at the artist and say hes not in my genre of music so im not going to listen to it, or hes 8 so it must suck, or hes on a TV show he must suck, or 15 year girls listen to him so he must suck.
And i dont disguard music jsut because it dosent come with some over the top articitc quality that goes over most audiences head. Sure i Love real classic roots hiphop but im not going to dismiss a song because its not THAT, theres a place in the world for a catchy hook and a nice beat.

OK alkemy your right you are king shit music god with a collection of vinyl containing tracks that your the only person in the world in possession of, all of wich are mind blowing and amasing which is why your the only one with em and are the worlds official hiphop historian, and therefor have more overall music knowledge than anyone else in the world and you just choose to ONLY talk about classic NY and underground mid 90s hiphop. you got me, ill admit you know more about new orleans bounce music than me even though i was raised in new orleans....oh wait we can talk about that because it sucks ...riiight...and you know more about flordia breaks and artists like agent K and jbreak (both awsome guys who have hooked me up on vinyl before) ....oops ya their now "real hiphop" so they suck and arent worth talking about, and southern hiphop which obviosuly sucks because it came from below the mason dixon line, and obvioulsy all i know is pop because im payed to play to a room that wants commercial music which obviosuly means that the area i lived in is full of idiots for not demanding i play black thought and non beiber rakewon

Pretty sure I can sum this thread up so we can lock it.
Justin Bieber - hot pop artist that not very many of us like
Raekwon - of Wu Tang Clan fame that many of us like
Raekwon collaborating on a song with Justin Bieber - not cool to most of us
Kanye West adding his two cents on the same track - just plain annoying

Business knowledge...hmmm. I think we all know how the music biz works bezzle. That doesnt mean that we cant call something wack when we think it is. Thats why I said earlier about you plus one'ing a comment that didnt totally back up your point.
I dont give 2 shits if Justin Bieber & Raekwon get paid to high heaven with the song, I dont listen to a track and think WOW, they must make a ton of money with tracks like these, I dont care!, just dont expect to not get criticism for it. I bet most of the Wu-Tang are laughing their asses off at it, I bet they all have a jokey dig at each other when they do stuff like this cause they are making money from it. But dont think for one minute that they actually respect the integrity of the track.

pretty much right. JB and Raekwon could be just an interesting pairing that would make something that fans from each would be interested in.
Kanye just hooked up because he saw a chance to get his name on something that'll make money. alotof these guys area doing just that and bastardizing otherwise interesting songs.
I also can't stand Kanye and will do my best not to play anything with his name on it.
I do mostly wedding so it's not too hard to avoid his stuff.

.....meanwhile Justin Bieber's bank account continues to swell while a couple of guys on the forum are arguing about whether they like the song or not.Pretty sure I can sum this thread up so we can lock it.
Justin Bieber - hot pop artist that not very many of us like
Raekwon - of Wu Tang Clan fame that many of us like
Raekwon collaborating on a song with Justin Bieber - not cool to most of us
Kanye West adding his two cents on the same track - just plain annoying

Dope beat and dope verses, but Bieber sucks on this. Damn! Never listened to him much before outside of the inescapable singles but he is indeed as awful as I imagined.

He doing it for the money...its just that simple. Marketing himself alongside JB would be career suicide...he knows this will get a little airplay and earn him a few bucks but its hardly gonna be a track that all of a sudden makes every pre-teen go and seek out Cuban Linx.

In all honesty Bezzle, I can see Alkemy's point. Hey, what ever the chef can do for marketing is great, but he should be ready for the consequences. For instance, he has no room to battle another MC anymore. Do you know what's happened to him in the hip hop world? He's going to get clowned all the time. lol At the same time, I can see your point bezzle.... Everyone has a right to market themselves in the music world.

IMHO and this is just my opinion, if you have 2 gold albums in 15 years (both of which came in the 1st few years) you really dont HAVE a career....now as part of the WU hes a legend but his solo career from a financial standpoint is ehhh at best
For instance, he has no room to battle another MC anymore.
Ya hed lose the battle, but hed leave the battle in a $250 thou car to his mansion knownin his kids college is paid for....dudes a grown ass man and has built his legacy, now its time to cash a check lol

lmao yall are trippin. I'm with Bezzle this doesn't ruin his image or anything at all. Definitely not career suicide and if anything hopefully career revitalizing by letting Justin fans get a taste of him (no everything). Ice Cube made a family movie and he's still the shit, who cares. He never was a gangsta even back in the NWA days anyway. Most of these rappers are fake and do a bunch of things that should ruin their career. Look at Rick Ross, still one of the hottest selling when he is a proven COP (CO even worse), and even denied it at first. Made a couple million sellin weight, yeah maybe sellin the weight off his belly to plastic surgeons.

So he goes from a ehhh financial situation to a $250 thou car and mansion etc from one collab with Justin Bieber, dont think so. And here is where the kicker is. Once he has done that collab, what happens when you lose a lot of your hardcore fans, make another album and it sells a LOT less than your previous LP's because people have lost that respect for you?. And its always about money with you Bezzle. This is music. If all anyone ever cared about was making as much money as soon as possible you wouldnt have Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Joy Division, Led Zeppelins, Wu-Tangs and the like. You would just have everyone making poptastic, bubblegum music. Everyone wants to make a living doing what they love but a lot of people, believe it or not dont want to sacrifice their artistic integrity or beliefs in order to sell bucketloads of records to pre pubescant kids. Of course there is the opposite side who just want to sell as many records in the qiuckest time possible in order to live a more comfortable life, good luck to them. They are the ones who will leave this world with no musical legacy whatsoever and will end up on one of those VH1 what happened to them episodes. They probably wont even be around in a couple of years time. People who have been around a LONG time are nearly always the ones who put in work and strive to better their last albums. THATS why Raekwon and JB have no business being together IMO.

Losing hardcore fans?? 6 Albums in 15 years 2 went gold and those were durring his superstar days as a member of wu tang, his last albums didnt even chart...ya those are some loyal fans lets keep them happy....if you go 15 years with the amount of exposure hes had and you still arent selling albums mabye its time to switch up the busniess plan

Not at all i would like peopel to make quality albums but i understand the busniess of sellling an album, put out a single that the masses like and theyll go buy an album. Look at eminems 1st LP, that was a masterpiece and his 1st single was WACK, hes one of the illest in the game and his 1st single didnt relfect his album at all, but it was catchy and hooked people into buying a bad ass album.

Hes earned his artistic integrity, real fans of music (not ones who drop him for doing a song with someone they dont approve of) already know the deal with him. And how is he selling out any artistic integrity just by working with beiber.....i dont give a fuck if he does a song with barney with baby bop singing the hook as long as hes bringin a raekwon 16 bars of lyrical fire hes not sellin out....its not sellin out when you do what yuo do to a larger crowd than others

So you dont think he has made a damn good living?. If he was so broke he would have done these type of tracks a long long time ago. Just cause he aint toppin the charts on the regular dont think he aint real comfortable. Making a real good living while not appearing in pathetic songs like this would appeal to me a lot more, thats why Im so dissapointed in him appearing on a trash track like this.
So anyone doing music for the love shouldnt really sell records?. Its down to people with good musical taste that spend their lives listening to music that makes reputable artists be able to make a living off their art. They know their music wont be appreciated by young kids (When I was real young I was into corny stuff too, its just the way kids are). They live off well rounded music lovers who appreciate when an artist has put a lot of heart into a record and they are the people who will provide you with a solid fanbase to allow you to keep doing what your doing, making a damn good living without having to sell your soul.
And so what if Method Man is on some corny show, as long as when his music LP drops he brings his a-game I couldnt give a toss
Thats in the world of POP music my friend. Wu-Tang put out Protect Ya Neck (hardly a single that the masses like) and created a massive buzz for themselves. And its not always that if you put out a single that generates a lot of sales that translates to album sales, not at all. Maybe people like Madonna & Mariah Carey that will work but the point you make is absurd. Think of all the biggest one-hit wonders in the world, how many of them artist went on to sell shedloads of albums....they are disposable pieces of music that more than likely ended the artists career before it began. Your "knowledge" of the music biz is tainted with the type of promises an A&R rep tells their new superstar rapper...naive barely describes you

I love how some Djs on this board somehow think that the only people who can have an opinion or love for music are peopel who have a residency....like you dont listen to music until you get one and the day you do is when msuic starts being unlocked. The amount of time youve been working in a club, your ability to read a crowd, or your record control have nothing to do wih listening and enjoying music. And playing tracks that the people in the crowd WANT to hear isnt a crime, thats what im paid to do and thats what they pay to see. I have plenty of my own time to listen to the music that i personally enjoy and theres plenty of time that i do enjoy listening to those trashy tracks. Theres a time and place for everything i dont always need some deep rooted message or complex metaphor, sometimes i just want a catchy tune to put me in a good mood. You should try it cause you really come off as a bit bothered and angry. Bottom line music as well as artists need to grow, adapt, evolve and change or theyll become stagnant and in nature as well as busniess anything that cant will eventually die out. Its like jay z said if you like his old shit buy his old album. Fuck staying in your box try new shit out
You are a sheep DJ. And you annoy me to high heaven.
Yes im a sheep..i did a fill set with nothing but flordia breaks, thats whats hot in the hot garbage world right underground EDM that was made in the late 80s early 90s and ive put together a labor day freestyle party where im doin an all vinyl breaks set....yup im a sheep alright because huda hudia & fixx are just tearin up the pop charts
Your a wannabe snobass dj, you live your life in this little musical box and think just because you can find some track from some nameless artist that noones ever heard of that that makes you somehow musically superior to the world. Your that dude who hears unknown rappers and rides their dick as long as noone knows who the fuck they are because it gives you that smug feeling you seem to love so much but as soon as they sell a few records or get a name you label them a "sellout" label them as pop and diss their work because you dont want to soil your royal music ears with music the commoners listen to. The whole thing gives you some kind of superiority complex where you feel that you just LOOOOVE music more than anyone else in the world, ya dont dude, seriously get over yourself, i was the same way in highschool i only listened to underground artists that noone else listened to and all it did was limit my musical viewpoints and its a sad existance, luckly i grew up. Musics subjective there is no right or wrong, if you like it then its right, your one of a kind vinyl of mc brooklyn st corner and DJ club parkinglot attendant is just as good as the chicken dance to the right ears. Thats why we as DJs cant have just 1 perfect set, because the ears in the crowd change and we have to evolve and adapt.

Can you get wutang on the phone and get them to come play my birthday party?? Theyll come free right since their in it for the love of the music and not the money right??

quote from RZA
Wu-Tang is the perfect medium to expose anything new because I got the most people coming together to buy it. For me to expose it for my own self, I don't think that would've been a wise thing for me to do. I might've caught more people than Bobby Digital caught, but I still wouldn't catch the magnitude of what the Wu-Tang could catch. Maybe this year or next year the game may be different
wait.....so rza uses wutang instead of personal releases for different ish because they have a wider collective established audience and therefor will increase record sales and get the music across to a larger audience....huh.....what a wacky idea huh,

Naw. When I make music, I make it to be heard, personally. And, if somebody download it, if they heard it, then my job was delivered. Of course I love to make the money. I get million dollar album budgets, so of course there's money involved with it. But, personally, as a musician, as an artist, the first thing is to be seen and heard. If you're not seen and heard, who cares? I was talking to Jim Jarmusch and he was like, somebody see his film, the guy's happy. He don't care. He wants somebody to see his art and appreciate it and that's how I feel about my music also. I never got pissed off at the Internet kids with the downloading. In fact, I told them, 'Help yourself. Have a good time.
Once again the mightly rza agreeing with me..MUSIC IS TO BE HEARD
But, personally, as a musician, as an artist, the first thing is to be seen and heard. If you're not seen and heard, who cares? I

Like I said, of course its great to make money doing what you love, but to do it while still keeping your artistic integrity is something only a few people (namely Rza) can do. Appearing on a track with Justin Bieber does not retain Raekwons artistic integrity, even he would know this. When he offers up parts of his catalogue to people to show off his art do you think he would include said track. Do yourself a favour Bezzle, instead of trawling wikipedia and the like, think outside the box before you post stuff.

Dude your the one not thinking out of the box...ONE TRACK dosent ruin the integrity of your career, you do the track and that gives you a larger platform to do what you need to do, its give and take when it comes to art and busniess, you want your art to reach the widestpossible audience you have to play the game. There are tons of artists who do this its called accepting life isnt perfect and sometime youll have to do things you dont like to get where you want to be.

Both agree with you?...get over yourself. Of course they know about the music business you tard. They were established artists waaay before this track came to light. You were making out that somehow appearing on a track with someone who has a massive following in the mainstream is a sure fire way of getting your name out to a wider audience, allowing you to then make your 16 tracks of classic shit LP to sell more. You got to be established already before you pull moves like that. Kanye and Rae are doing this purely for the money thus it takes away from their artistic integrity. You were making out that somehow appearing on a track with someone who has a massive following in the mainstream is a sure fire way of getting your name out to a wider audience, allowing you to then make your 16 tracks of classic shit LP to sell more.

You got to be established already before you pull moves like that
So now Raekwon is not an established artist??
He's not?
hahahahahahahahaha
Oh bezzle.
mabye you didnt see the question mark. do they not have those cross the pond? YOU just said that you jackass
This is like explaining the birds and bees to my nephew. Yes Rae is an established artist, thats why he can pull moves like this. It dont discard the fact that it takes away from his artistic integrity. The way you make it sound is that this is the blueprint of how every artist should start out. Try that when you are unknown and you will be ignored by your target audience when you eventually want to bring out your 16 tracks of classic whatever you said...keep up.

Hes not losign ANYTHING you think people are going to protest and not buy his next album because he did this track...YOUR AN IDIOT, his fans are his fans. I hate to burst your bouble but all that shit he talks on his album...IT AINT REAL, so if him doing a track to get paid with bieber bursts your illusion of him then you have bigger issues than music.

Dont be an idiot bezzle. thats such a childish response.
Anyway, yeah, when I hear a murmur about Raes next LP I will be a lot more cautious about buying it instead of just buying it on the strength of it being him. Why, cause if I buy his LP and there are tracks with Bieber on there, I might just not buy it you clown.

you know you could just read the cover and see if bieber is on it. Its really your loss if you dont buy an album because of one guest apperance on 1 track, you may be missing out on alot of good music....i guess thats just how a REAL music lover thinks though and not someone who just buys it for apperance

There are alot of people out there that would like to think Art imitates Life.
The attitude that Rae and the rest of Wu lives strong in so many (alot of you could NEVER understand a ghetto's/project's upbringing), I think it would be difficult to for the same people to understand how in the world he could skip to that side.
It's been done many times, but this hits a little harder to many.
I think Bez has many good points, but Wu Tang started as a crew of misfits. No one wanted to sign them, so they collectively said "fukk you" to the major record companies and blew up on their own.
Am I wrong, Alkemy, by saying that your issue (as well as mine) is that attitude no longer exists with this collaboration. It's like Raekwon left us...he used to be one of our voices. Now he's being fitted for skinny jeans and pro-keds.
Easy to pop a song in your set just because you're familiar with the artist.
Not so is the ability to feel a production because you know that it's from the street, not a studio.

Yeah, its kind of my point but its more than that too. I am such a Hip-Hop fanatic and maybe its a bit overly used but I still believe in Hip-Hop as a culture. When collabs like this happen it grates on me. Its like when they come out in interviews and say stuff like "we do this for the Hip-Hop fans", "we are about the culture" and the like, its kind of a kick in the teeth when he does a track with this kid. And I know its not only about me, a lot of Hip-Hop fans will feel this way. And its not "keeping it real" mentality its just that if you hold hip-hop and its finest artist (rae, not kanye) in high regard you are bound to feel a little needle when you hear rae spitting in between biebers warbling.

LOL Dude, they said the same thing about the Shaq record how many years back, and that's back when that shit really could cause problems for a career. Rae will be alright, don't worry about that. When you get to the level of accomplishment he's at, one record ain't gonna make a difference. I think you're placing way too much importance on this track that's nothing more than a blip on a radar that won't even see this shit years down the line.
And who knows, maybe Rae sees talent in the kid, wasn't it Usher who did as well and that's how the kid got noticed? Maybe Rae's kids like him, maybe he likes him...after all WU TANG IS FOR THE CHILDREN!
