Serato Video General Discussion

Talk about Serato Video and Video-SL.

New Macbook Pro for Video

djrayray0981 5:04 PM - 17 March, 2010
Since my other Mac got stolen. I haven’t really been able to run video as flawless as I like. So I have been shopping around for another mac. I just came across this from Craigslist. He was asking $1600. I was trying to get him to come down to $1400, but said the lowest he would go is $1500. Please let me know your thoughts, or any other suggestions. Here are the specs.

Macbook Pro 15
2.66GHz
320GD HDD
9600M GT+GFX 512MB
4GB RAM

I was going to wait around for the new Mac’s, but haven’t heard any recent news when there coming out. Just rumors. Let me know what you all think. Thanks
VJ Justin Allen 5:13 PM - 17 March, 2010
Wait one more week. But also be prepared to pay an increased price...they are going up a bit.
djrayray0981 6:07 PM - 17 March, 2010
I waited this long, don’t see how another week or two won’t hurt. I know I will be paying a lot more. Which is fine. As long as I have a peace of mind, that it will not crash on me. It’s happen to me 3-4 times already. Shit was not fun. Had people booing me, screaming you suck, cracking jokes. Well I’m be hide the booth trying to reboot and figure out what the hell just happen. I had to unplug my hard drive and turn off the video plug-in.
Millz 6:22 PM - 17 March, 2010
always have a backup plan in place...some use their iphone with a video cued up, others have a cd in a 3rd deck, others have xm plugged in and ready to go...you can never be too safe...at least if you have some type of media going on within a few seconds you will only hear the boo's for a few seconds
djpuma_gemini 6:31 PM - 17 March, 2010
I'm buying the current version when the new ones drop.
djrayray0981 6:37 PM - 17 March, 2010
Yeah, learn the hard way, Now I have either my IPod hook up ready to go, or bring some records with me. Was totally un-prepared. Haven't had shit crash on me since 2004 when I was just using a P.C. But I guess you can never be too prepared. But this new Mac needs to drop soon. Miss spinning my vidz.
VJ Justin Allen 6:42 PM - 17 March, 2010
That's why I love using my DVJ's as my turntable...instant 100% video backup in less than 5 seconds.
djpuma_gemini 6:44 PM - 17 March, 2010
yeah I don't have a video backup, but maybe I should invest in the ipod cable to video out. Toss on a 20 minute video mix and I'm golden.
djrayray0981 8:32 PM - 17 March, 2010
Damn, homeboy just called me, Wants to meet up today. Thinking I’m going to get it. I’m just going to sell my current Mac to get the New Mac once it drops. But this Mac should get the job done. Hope I'm not rushing into this. He's going to meet up with me here after work. Going to make sure I check it out and call apple right there with him and get it register under my name.
djpuma_gemini 8:47 PM - 17 March, 2010
You will probably be able to get the high end 15" for that price when the new ones drop and it will have a 1 year warranty through apple

No guarantees, but it's up to you.

The latest is 2.8ghz 4gb ram and 512MB video
Charlie Five 8:56 PM - 17 March, 2010
^ thats what I have
Charlie Five 8:56 PM - 17 March, 2010
Wait the Mac in question is PRE UNIBODY, correct?
djrayray0981 8:58 PM - 17 March, 2010
That would be a huge drop by apple. I just priced out the high end one. It total's out to $2,648, but that's with a 3 year warranty which is $349. How much did you get your for Charlie Five?

It’s the UNIBODY. It’s only a year old.
Charlie Five 9:03 PM - 17 March, 2010
Oh ok. That's what I thought. I paid top dollar but sold my pre-unibody at a good price so the breakdown was like a 1K difference with the student discount and i got a free iPod touch which I sold.

I bet you could get him lower than 1,500. Do a quick search to see what others are going for and give him a sales job.
djrayray0981 9:26 PM - 17 March, 2010
Well, I thought $1400 was responsible, but he said $1500 was the lowest he would go. I did do a quick research, and didn’t find anything close to this. The next closes (lol) I could find was a 3.06 with a 500HDD and he was asking $2500. But I would feel like a dick if I called him back and told him never mind if he didn’t come down on price, after I already agreed when he lowered it $100 bucks more to $1500. If it’s only a year old and is in brand new condition like he said it is with 2 year warranty still left. Seems like a fair price. Now you guys got me 2nd thinking over here.

I don't think they make a 2.66ghz with 512Mb video card.
djpuma_gemini 9:35 PM - 17 March, 2010
If it's with apple care than I guess it's worth it, but you can also buy applecare on ebay and save a ton (about half price)

I did it for my fiances macbook and it worked no problems.
Charlie Five 9:37 PM - 17 March, 2010

Yeah I would make sure it is 512. I wouldn't say it would be a dealbreaker if only 256 though.
Charlie Five 9:41 PM - 17 March, 2010
You could use the...I thought it was 512...Hum I have to think. I'll tell you what, I'm still interested, I'll give you 1400.

It actually is a good deal for 1500 ESPECIALLY if the Apple Care is all good. The computer should run V-SL no problem ALTHOUGH my 2.8 is the only one I have ever used that can run at the lowest latency and video output on high. Not sure if that one can do it.

Good advance. Definitely going to make sure I check each spec and make sure it is as advertise. If something is off, like 256 instead of 512. I’m going to offer $1300. I think he would take it, since he is driving down here to meet me. The 9600M is the one with the dedicated video card right?
djpuma_gemini 10:00 PM - 17 March, 2010
Yes 9600 dedicated
Charlie Five 10:01 PM - 17 March, 2010
they both i believe are dedicated. you dont want it if it is not
Eloy Garcia 10:07 PM - 17 March, 2010
Yo man Apple is take for every on them new Macbook Pro's. If you are going a buy a Macbook Pro now make shore is has the 9600M with 512. I say that cause you want to have head room for better app later on. With a 9600M you can run/mix 4 videos at one time. But that's up to Serato to make it happen.
djpuma_gemini 10:10 PM - 17 March, 2010
That's why I'm waiting for the new ones to drop and pickup the high end 2.8 with 4gb ram and 512 video for probably around 1600 or so.

Apple always drops the prices of the old stuff when they release new shit.
Eloy Garcia 10:16 PM - 17 March, 2010
My boy Puma using his brain... Puma go for the faster one... 2.93 or even the 3.0+ then you are really going to be using it for some time.
djpuma_gemini 10:26 PM - 17 March, 2010
2.8 is the highest they got. right? I already got the approval (from the fiance) for purchase. I usually I just go balls out and buy shit, but this time I'm doing it right.

I told myself I'll never buy a new one from apple. I'll have to wait and see what they got when the new ones drop (as far as old ones)

I used my old 2.4 with 4gb of ram with ME ad recorded for almost 4 hours with no problems, so I'm sure a 2.8 with 512 video will work way better.
djpuma_gemini 10:27 PM - 17 March, 2010
Aaah I see, you can choose the 2.8 and bump up to 3.06. Hopefully that will be an option when the drop the new ones, but I'm sure that one will still be 2Gs at least.
djrayray0981 10:32 PM - 17 March, 2010
Thanks for all the advance and tips. It’s pretty much a done deal. Said he can be down here by 6p.m. So my next step now, is dealing with a convertor? I know I seen a post around here somewhere, where they have a few products to suggest. My old Mac I was able to run S-video and composite with no problem. Cause it was all analog. Now I have to deal with this whole digit thing. I use composite when I spin vidz at the bar, but mobile wise, I use S-video to my projector. Just curious what everybody here is using. If you can post the product and prices, that would be great. Hoping to have everything I need by this Friday. I heard if I get the Mini Display port to VGA, it will work without having to have a convertor, but would need one if I was to use S-video or composite?
Eloy Garcia 10:33 PM - 17 March, 2010
Puma they had the 3.06 I think the week I was chillin with you in Seattle...
djpuma_gemini 11:00 PM - 17 March, 2010
Yeah I see it new on Apple, but I'm looking for a refurb. Still gotta wait for apple to drop new ones.

They are taking their sweet ass time.
Eloy Garcia 12:08 AM - 18 March, 2010
Apple has been Laptop blocking hard body. I just want a i7 Macbook Pro and new ATI/Nvada video card and I am good. Then all we need is a Video Sample Player in VSL/SSL game over.
djpuma_gemini 12:21 AM - 18 March, 2010
Video sampler. that'd be sweet.

But why mix more than two videos, they'll look weird. It's not like riding an inst an acap together. The videos would blend, or if you did a grid, you could do 4, but the crowd probably wouldn't understand 4 diff vids.
Eloy Garcia 1:48 AM - 18 March, 2010
no but 3 would be cool or like I said Puma.... Video/Audio Sample Player....
djpuma_gemini 3:20 PM - 18 March, 2010
So what happened, was it 256 or 512. I hope you didn't walk with 256 for 1500
djrayray0981 3:37 PM - 18 March, 2010
Everything was just as advertise. The only thing that was not mention: it also has a 9400M 256 and I guess it kicks up to 9600M 512 when it needs to. Is this standard with all 9600M? Or is this the Duel Graphic Card the Mac stop producing?
djpuma_gemini 3:47 PM - 18 March, 2010
the dual graphic card that the macs still use today.
Charlie Five 4:33 PM - 18 March, 2010
How much you pay..................................
djrayray0981 4:48 PM - 18 March, 2010
As stated above. $1500. Couldn't get it for any less
djpuma_gemini 6:13 PM - 18 March, 2010

Thanks. I didn't get a chance to mess with it much, We meet up at star bucks. Made sure everything ran good and checked out all the specs. Then drop it off at the pad and rush to meet up with my brother and friends for St. Patty's Day. I'll be updating it tonight. Geting Itunes ready, downloading Serato, and looking online to get the Mini Display and convertor for my video's. Don't think I'll have it ready by Friday to do videos. Going to have to wait till next week.

Yo djrayray0981 did you check to see if it was duel GPU? if you don't know how this can help: support.apple.com This will teach you how to Switch to higher performance graphics on MacBook Pro. Thats if the laptop has it.

I do have the Time Machine back-up on my current Macbook Pro, but it's a 500GB hard drive. I only have 80 gigs left. And the New Mac I have now, is only 320GB. So don’t think it would take. I haven’t use the time machine to transfer anything yet, so not really sure how that would work. Not sure if I can pick and choose what I want to transfer over. I just plug it in every 2 weeks to keep it updated. But all my video’s are on my external hard time, serato ready to go. All my audio is on my laptop, I use ITunes to keep everything organized. So All I’m looking for is just to transfer my iTunes Library. Which I’ve done once before. I just don’t think I will have the Mini Display and convertor delivered on time for this Friday. Unless I can find what I need at Best Buy or Fry’s or something

djrayray0981 8:51 PM - 22 March, 2010
Alright. Well I tried to spin videos this past weekend, but still coming across the same issue. (My computer freezing up). I’m starting to think maybe it’s my hard drive?. I have the Mac studio edition 500GB WD. I use the firewire 800. I’m thinking it’s because I only have 8.78 gb left? Do you think it’s because it’s pretty much almost max out?. I did buy another hard drive and I just transfer everything over. I bought a 1tb Macbook Studio Edition. I just transfer everything over last night, so I haven’t got a chance to test it out. But I’m over here at work thinking about it. Bugs the shit out of me, because it’s not like I’m buying crap shit. Anyhow, I showed up at the bar early to set up video. I didn’t even get a chance to mix before it started freezing up. I had the video running while adjusting the projector. The video finish, so I hoped back on my New Mac to throw on another video, when it was stuck frozen. I had to hold down the power button to restart it. I didn’t even bother continuing. I just switched out my Mac and didn’t run videos for the night. But this is driving me nuts. It has to be my hard drive.
djpuma_gemini 9:17 PM - 22 March, 2010
500Gb with 8Gb left is very bad.

You need to have way more than that for it to function better.
djpuma_gemini 9:22 PM - 22 March, 2010
This freezing happened on the new or old macbook pro?
djrayray0981 9:49 PM - 22 March, 2010
On both. But only when I select videos from the hard drive, I also have some audio crates in there as well. But that has to be it. I didn’t think having little bit of space on my hard drive would effect its performance like it would with the laptop. I’m hoping I get a chance to test it out tonight when I get home. But if I still have this freezing issue with videos. I really don’t know what it can be.
djpuma_gemini 10:07 PM - 22 March, 2010
What format are the externals.

Hopefully HFS
djrayray0981 10:18 PM - 22 March, 2010
don't remember what format it's in. But I will double check later tonight. Wish I could leave work now.
jbnyc 1:35 AM - 23 March, 2010
sorry to hear that rayray,i have a black macbook 2.4 with a shitty video card and thank god never had a frozen issue, i run videos with a lacie 1gb external thru 800 firewire, i do want to upgrade my computer and im also waiting for the new ones to drop, let us know if it was the hard drive, have you tried to download like 25 videos on the new laptop and mix them for an hour to see if it freezes up???
Eloy Garcia 5:57 AM - 23 March, 2010
One MacRumors reader emailed Steve Jobs directly about concerns about how long he's had to wait for the new MacBook Pro updates and Apple's recent focus on the iPad. He wrote "I recognise the need for secrecy etc but I am really losing heart in the lack of vision for the MBP and Mac Pros. Not expecting a response but as someone who has personally switched dozens of people onto the mac way this is a sad email for me to compose."

As he's been occasionally known to do, Steve Jobs reportedly responded with a short reply that simply said "Not to worry."
djpuma_gemini 2:48 PM - 23 March, 2010
I saw that last night too.

Still waiting.
Counting my pennies.
