Does anyone else DJ with ONLY the 57? (No turntables or CDJs)

So here's my story: I started DJing in college. Most of the parties I played were really crowded with barely any room for my stuff. One party was particularly bad. The floor kept shaking and people kept bumping into my turntables. You forum users know that nothing kills a party faster than a needle coming off the vinyl. It happened about four times before I decided to try something new.
On the fly I mapped "fast forward" and "rewind" to the up/down joystick control of the 57. Left/Right on the joystick adjusted loops. Group one had loop toggle/trigger/cues and the rest is all the same. Then I simply used the keyboard to adjust tempo.
It worked out really well and I've been doing a slightly modified version of that ever since. I never got good enough to scratch (and drunk college kids don't really care about scratching anyway) so I literally just haul off the 57 whenever I play a party and mix everything through that one piece of equipment. Most people think I'm crazy, but I actually prefer my set-up. I don't think I'm ever going back to turntables.
I'm wondering if anyone else here does that?
And am I still allowed to call myself a DJ?

Man that sounds kind of impressive i would have never thought to do that!!
Yeah of course, you are still djing just using the tempo control on the computer! I dont know how you can say you will never use turntables again though, i could never stop using turntables never never never lol.

I never though of mapping the joysticks to fast forward and rewind. Great idea.
I actually do this all the time for weddings and kids parties. But I use the 57 and my m audio trigger finger. Just map the faders to pitch and the cues to the pads and I can rock it all night ;)

@Cubs21214: Sounds like you might be a candidate for the VCI-300 with ITCH. You'd have your same small footprint and not have to worry about people bumping into your decks, but would likely have a much easier time of mixing your tracks together.

I did that a couple of times at a bar where they only had cdjs 100s. The 100s were only used for the pitch.

Yeah a couple of my friends have done the same thing as me when one of the turntables is broken (it happens all too often at clubs).
@CAW: You're totally right, I think I Itch'd my 57 in a sense, basically turning it into a one-piece DJ Set-up.
Has anyone on here used the VCI-300? I'd want to demo it first before I even think of buying it.

Not sure where you are from, I'm gonna guess Chicago given the 'Cubs' in your name. I know Guitar Center has VCI-300s out on display in some of their locations. Give your local GC a ring and see if they have one out for you to go play with. Or whatever your local audio/DJ shop is.

I was doing that for a few months last year, every weekend, was inspired by group 3 on ttm, but have mapped my way. used b2 and b4 as play, b2 b5 as set cue and b3 and 56 for cue for each deck, rotaries for scroling tracks and crates, and when you push them they become pichbend and pich. and joystics up for a loading tracks, and joystics for fast forward and rewindfor each deck one.
That setup was great for me like i use some midi controler, it works great.

I think thats why we buy VCI-300s for these kind of situations. but that is awesome to do with the 57SL.

yea man-played like this loads of times, same deal when space is limited, dodgey equipment or sometimes just at the end of a long night (i use the 57 mixer case as a stool if i get tired playing for hours!)
i did try use some of the 57 controls for playback but still prefer the keyboard with stickers for most controls
i also use a korg mini midi pad for cues and loops...
and if you do want to scratch a bit..just bring one deck...using the input reverse, instant doubles and pay attention to which side your loading into is easy to get your head around...
must admit itch looks pretty cool for this-have not tried it yet but seen few sets played from it

I used to do the afterwork party at a small tapas bar. Oddly they had a booth AND a 57 with Denon 3500s. But like most club equipment that doesnt have a soundman checking things out, things break. One night I was in the middle of my afterwork set, and the "vinyl" on one of the 3500s flew off. (some one had stolen the little clip, Like they do at every Sam Ash and Guitar Center.) I saw it and was hoping that some Gaffers tape was enough to hold it. Anyhow the vinyl disk fell behind the booth and was lost for the night, if not forever. I used input reverse the rest of the night. The late night guy came and I told him what was up.. He said, "I never use the decks anyways".
I'd been spinning there for about 6 months with him coming after and although I stuck around to listen, I never hung out in the booth (not enough space) to watch. He basically mapped some of the functions to the joysticks and other buttons and was on internal mode blending with cuepoints and a push or pull to change the speed. If things started to fall off, he would just hit a cue button set to the 1st beat and keep it moving.
I never considered him as anything above "average" before I knew there were no decks involved. But after I found out I figured that his efforts were worth more respect ... that is until he told me that THIS was how he learned and he NEVER used decks... like EVER...

We use TTM57s in internal mode for most of our weddings (I would say 95% of them).
A lot of the time we do two weddings back to back on Saturdays. The least amount of equipment to carry is better.
My son is pretty good at mixing with it (Microwave style). He also uses the toggle switch for forward and reverse.
We only use turntables for Proms, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Skating Rink and Urban parties. Even when we use Turntables, we have a second TTM57 hooked up in Internal Mode.
Here are some pics.

This next picture was taken before we connected the 2nd laptop but, you can see how everything is hooked up.

Yeah that's exactly like my set-up (except I only have on 57 and one laptop).
And I'm loving the blue control record.

Only two.
The first pictures were taken a couple of years ago, before we changed the faceplates.
You can see how my son has grown from one picture to the next.

Couldn´t see that from the pictures.
Very, very, VERY nice setup btw.
Love the principle of the father/son dj team.
Is your son on the forum?
Keep up the good work!

this is my fail safe if all hell breaks loose.
in almost 2 years Ive gone to it twice.
I used a very simular setup, then once the nanoKontrol came out I mapped everything on the internal player to the kontrol.
its basically like having a curb-side denon hc1000.
great in a pinch...like, I showed up to a gig @ 930
and someone from the cleaning crew lifted the turntables...no one noticed
til i got there...
HAD to go all internal./

After the wedding I did this weekend, (2 Hr drive), 3rd floor banquet hall (broken elevator) and torrential rain, I think I'm going to stop bringing turntables to weddings. (I'm ranting, I'll probably still bring 'em) They look nice and people always compliment that I'm using turntables. But in a wedding setting, its like having a Ferrari in rush-hour traffic. I can do everything that I need to (for a wedding) using the 57 and internal mode and with the addition of my Denon DJ DN-HC1000, even more. I'll save my back (I live on the 3rd floor with no elevator), My Hands (I use the RoadReady Cases with the name stamped into the handle so it "Brands" you every time you carry them without gloves), and my sanity (there were kids running all over the place and knee-sliding across the floor... it was a mess).
I'll be better off saving the Tables for when I'm really gonna "spin"

KENNY Q, Where did you guys customize your face plate?? LOOKS SICK..
I just got the 57 and Im still trying to learn it. How do you change the settings on the 57? I didnt know you can do all of this on the 57. All I use is group 1,2,5,6 (6 I barely use). It an overwhelming mixer, but I know that once I get to know it better I will fall in love with it.

My son had the 57 mastered at the age of 11. If he could do it...... so can you.
LOL,
Good luck and read the owners manual.

I wouldn't call myself a dj if i just used a mixer only, thats just my opinion though. I have spun at alot of weddings and other parties where i could have just used my laptop and nobody would have ever noticed but i feel like a rip off that way. I would rather lug around my turntables than just be a jukebox

I was thinking about getting a DN-S1200 to use with my HC1000s. Anyone doing this yet?
I am on the road to using just my 57SL for parties that I need to take my PA out with me. I use turntables when I go do Turntablism with the Turntable crew.
But for mobile gigs, I want to keep the equipment to a small foot print since I have to take the other stuff like sound system and lights.
