Hi there, new to the site and vestax/itch and although im very happy with my VCI300 i do have a small gripe which is rather annoying.
On a couple of occasions now my laptop has shutdown whilst using itch and unit and then reboots.
when this happens the hardware freezes however i can still touch the platters and they change colour to my touch. After it reboots i turn off hardware and start up again, sometimes the blue screen will come back on and again it shuts down straight away, other times its fine.
The first time it shut down after half hour, second time was after 1.5hrs and just last night was after 45 mins, then i restarted and it was fine for the 1.5hrs i was using it.
i have copied the error reprt here it is.

Hi TJ56. My first recommendation would be to download and install the latest version of ITCH 1.0.4 by clicking this link below:
www.serato.com

Also, have you tried powering the unit on other USB ports on your computer?

Let me know how you get on. Thanks
TJ56 10:53 PM - 8 January, 2009
hi Aroha, i have tried other usb ports the first one i got blue screen after a while then i swapped to another which is now getting it too so im now on my third which i used for 1.5hrs without any blue screen but who's to say this wont eventually happen with this one? i only have one more left on my laptop lol.
i was thinking about uninstalling then reinstalling but i was unsure if i would lose all the tracks that i have build overviews for. i know its a simple case of rebuilding but i have all the pitches assigned to them.
is the latest version still in beta?
TJ56 11:37 PM - 8 January, 2009
hi there, downloaded and installed new version still happened on first usb port then 2nd and just got my first one on third. its late now so gonna call it a nite.
got to be a usb fault, fingers cossed it aint hardware.
i look forward to you reply in the morning. thanks

Hey Rob, damn it sounds like you're having a rough time. Another thing you should do if you haven't already is switch off wifi and bluetooth. Secondly, to help us understand better what is happening when you experience your crash, can you please do a crash dump for me? Click on this link to find out how www.serato.com

Also, with regards to your tracks/overviews - all the tags are written to your audio files so you don't need to worry about losing them when you uninstall.

Thanks

Hi Aroha. i have uploaded the most recent crash file and another random one, new to this so hopefully i have done it all correctly.
PS i have brought my equipment into work with me today just to test it and its currently running fine in the first USB. Weird...... however may i add that i am not putting it under any stress all i am doing is playing a mix thru one side just to see if it crashes.

Hi Aroha.
UPDATE.
Didnt get blue screen today while at work, the only thing that did happen though was the sound ceased to come through the headphones. closed down the software and then restarted it which done the trick but im guessing this should not happen.
im gonna set it back up at home and re-test for blue screen shutdown.
i will let you know results
cheers

Hi TJ56 - our development team are reviewing your crash dump today. We'll get back to you shortly. Thanks

Aroha 2:54 AM - 12 January, 2009
Hey Rob - Firstly, do you have any other USB devices plugged in when you're running the VCI? If so, try running it without them.

Our developers have reviewed your crash log and have discovered you've got a serious error with a Microsoft driver crashing. Unfortunately as we don't have code for that driver we can't help you with that specifically but I can suggest this: try setting the VCI-300 as a default sound card, and run it for a while in some other program (such as iTunes) to see if it crashes there as well. Let me know how you get on and good luck.
TJ56 11:18 AM - 12 January, 2009
Hi Aroha
being a novice when it comes to computers etc i'm unsure how i set VCI as default soundcard also what do you mean by running machine in itunes or similar? i do not have itunes nor do i use them for purchasing music.
i look forward to your response

PS i have no other USB device running whilst using the VCI.
Cheers and regards

OK, what you need to do is (with the VCI-300 plugged in) go into the Start menu on your PC, then to the Control Panel menu. Then select Sounds and Audio devices and go to the Audio Playback drop down menu. Here you should see the VCI as an option for audio playback, so select it.

Then what you need to do is try playing back audio from another media player, whatever you use to manage your music - if not itunes, Windows Media Player or similar. Make sure the master output level on the VCI is turned up and you should be able to hear your audio running through it. Monitor this for a while for similar crashes.

Best of luck and let me know what happens.
TJ56 9:53 PM - 12 January, 2009
hi aroha, its 21.52 here in the UK so a tad late but what i will do is run it until 10.30 then let you know the results, cheers for info.

TJ56 10:47 PM - 12 January, 2009
hi aroha
ok i did as you mentioned and selected VCI as audio playback.
i then opened mp3's with the windows media player.
i did not have the VCI hooked up to any audio device such as amp etc so i plugged my headphones into the unit
sure enough i could hear the media player through the headphones although very very low, i had to turn monitor control right up.
no crashes were observed however it was only a simple 30 min test.
let me know if the test needs to run for a longer period and i will do so on wednesday.
cheers

The low audio level through your headphones sounds like you may have the unit set to Thru and not PC. Can you check this at the back of your unit? I would recommend trying to run media player for at least a couple of hours since you've reported crashes after around 1.5 hours. Thanks
TJ56 9:19 AM - 13 January, 2009
Hi Aroha
i am at work at moment but i txt my wife to check where the switch was on my VCI at home.
it was set to PC.

Aroha 7:33 PM - 13 January, 2009
OK, well that's ll in order then. Let me know once you've run media player for a couple of hours through the VCI and whether or not you experienced any crashes. Thanks
TJ56 11:09 PM - 13 January, 2009
Hi Aroha, i hope your well.
ok, i ran media player as before playing back through VCI for 2hrs, no crash occured..

Hey Rob - our suggestion now would be to take your computer in to an expert who can check out your drivers and uninstall/reinstall anything that is faulty. It'd be a good idea to take a log of this thread and the crash dump which you uploaded to the site so they can better understand the problem. Sorry we can't help you any further, I hope you can get it sorted without too much stress and hassle so you can finally play with your new unit without anymore hassles. Good luck!
TJ56 8:02 AM - 14 January, 2009
Ok Aroha, will do. im pleased its nots a fault with the VCI.
thanks for all your support pal.
Take care and best wishes.
kind regards

Hi Aroha
i hope your good mate.
ok quick update, took my laptop into PC place where i got it and showed the guy there the crash dump etc and copy of our chat, at first he was a bit of a tool but anyway i agreed he was the all knowing brain and then he was fine, he said it could be a compatibility issue. he recommended i do a full reinstall of laptop back to factory settings which i eventually got round to doing last night. after this i reinstalled all vista updates from automatic updates over web. i then turned off all update checking stuff and reinstalled VCI and software, blue screen again after short while. i then done another reinstall and didnt connect to net or install updates. i then reinstalled VCI etc and after short while same again.
i decided to run VCI on a desktop machine which runs XP and has quadcore CPU an over 2GB of ram, at first got freeze on right platter but no blue screen i then turned it off VCI and back on and its been running fine for last 3-4 hrs as said no blue screen.
i spoke on phone to tech guys for laptop and they are saying it has to be hardware as i ran my mobile phone thru the USB and its fine, they also asked how i ran the hardware if it was powered thru USB, i mentioned that it was and also said the unit can be powered thru mains adaptor. thay suggested to run on mains as the fault could be The laptop not being able to power the VCI properly causing it to shut down... what do you think? could this be the problem? have you had this type of situation happen before? ie laptop crashes because VCI drawing power that laptop cannot provide?
sorry for long winded message mate but i would appreciate your comments.
thanks and regards
Rob
TJ56 11:54 PM - 30 January, 2009
hi Aroha, just done test with power adaptor and guess what???? yip blue screen again. properly miffed now to be honest, my only guess is it is the laptop which is pretty disheartening as i just got it in oct but i would need to run a lenghty test on a desktop or another machine. i really do hope i dont have a dodgy VCI as i bought it through ebay as it was reallt difficult to get one in UK from any distributors. serial number is (SERIAL REMOVED).
i managed to take a pic of the blue screen message before it shut down this is what it said.

A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

i fthis is the first time youve seen this stop screen error restart your computer if this screen appears again follow these steps.
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.
If problems continue disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. if you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer and press F8 to select advanced startup options and then select safe mode.

Sorry again Aroha for lenghty message but just want to include everything, i really love my VCI in the times ive had it working and just want to get to bottom of this.
Could it be Vista or could it be crap laptop? Advent 5302 intel core 2 duo 1.83GHz, 2GB memory 250GB hard drive? just thought i'd also mention that i bought this from PC world as a reconditioned unit but it was like new.
Tearing my hair out with frustration here and appreciate your help/guidance.
thanks

hi Aroha, i appreciate its been the weekend etc and you wont be able to respond until yur back at work but here goes new update.
i reinstalled unit etc back on my laptop on saturday night, downloaded Service pack 1 for vista. plugged in VCI and after 2-3 attempts it worked and worked well for couple of hours before i turned it off. next day it crashed after an hour. i then installed the VCI on my nephews laptop which i have borrowed to test it on, (just incase it was my laptop) an advent 5311 with dual core CPU 1.89GHz and 1gb of ram with Vista home premium which is barely a month and a half old. At first it ran ok so i turned it off and decided i would test again later on in the day. to my dissapointment it has jut blue sreened. i am absolutely stumped now mate and really worried that my VCI is faulty. this unit cost me £565 (UK Sterling) and i'd be devistated if this was the case as im unsure if i could return it to be fixed.
i hope you can reply Aroha asap please.
PS i will also upload the latest crash details from the new laptop i reloaded the equipment on for your tech guys to examine.
Thanks and Regards

i very much appreciate this guys, i understand you are an extremely busy guy charles nd my sincere apologies if i seem impatient but its just i have tried so many different things with such high hopes each time and to have the same outcome is really dissapointing for me especially as i love the unit and i really want it to be trouble free.
this machine has got me back into dj'ing and its such a buzz again but when it crashes its such a shame.
anyway i look forward to hearing from you charles

Hi guys,
one other thing i forgot to mention in my mails which im ever so sorry about and may shed some light on the faults. when my laptop crashes and shuts down the VCI also freezes, most lights are static and no buttons can be switched on/off, the unit has to be switched off and restarted. When everything is resterted sometimes the laptop will crash again and the VCI freeze and other times it will last a little while.

Hope this goes towards sorting problem

Regards
Rob
