I bought a hp laptop with 4 usb ports esspecially so i could connect serato scratch and 2 x Pioneer CDJ-400 cd decks but when i connect them is says that i have the USB Controller has exceeded the bandwidth.

I am connecting up Scratch first and that works fine, then i connect 1 of the CDJ's and that works fine, but as soon as i try to connect the 2nd CDJ up, it comes up with this error. They are all connected to seperate USB ports directly in to the laptop and i am not using any usb hubs. The CD players seem to take up 6% and Scratch takes up 74%. Is there any way i change the amount Scratch takes up?

I only seem to be short by a few % so was thinking off changing the reserved amount from 10% to 5%, is this possible? And would it work?

Please help

Thanks in advance

Have you plugged in any other usb devices?
AFAIK Serato demands more bandwith as it actually needs but is able to operate with less. Plugging in SSL first is a good idea. Since you have already done that I am curious what the mods will say.

Hi Mojo, thanks for your comments. I haven't got any other devices plugged in, unless it is recognising something internally.

I have gone in to the device manager and it won't let me change the reserved percentage for each USB port, does anyone know how to change it?

I thought you can use 2 x CDJ400's with Serato? If not, i have just wasted nearly £1,000 on a 2nd CDJ & a laptop..

Can anyone else help?

Thanks in advance

Hi Dan,

You can use 2 X CDJs and a SL1, but it will depend on your computer really. Have you tried using a powered hub to connect your CDJs?
dpharrison 6:49 PM - 5 January, 2009
Hi Nick,

I have tried a USB hub, but it still does the same. The Laptop has 4 x USB ports but the bandwidth seems to be combined between the 4 of them, Can you get Laptop's where the Bandwidths is split between each port? If so, can you point me in the right direction? The Laptop i bought is a hp Pavilion dv9823em, is there a specific laptop you would recomend or is there any way i can change the settings on this one?

Thanks

Because PC's vary so much it's hard to know exactly which models will work and what wont.

Do you have any expansion slots on your current PC? You could try an express card.
Alternatively, try disabling your web cam if you have one. They often drain USB power.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the sugestions.

I've tried disabling the web cam but that didn't work. I went to PC world tonight and the only expansion cards they had did not work on Vista. Do you know of any that do?

Alternatively, can i use Firewire to connect either the CDJ's or Serato? If so, how do i go about doing that?

Thanks

Anyone?

Hi there dpharrison,

Go over to New Egg and try this out:

www.newegg.com

It's expresscard 34/54 which is compatible with your laptop and also comes with vista drivers, and only costs $20 USD.

So what you would do is hook this up in your laptop, and move your CDJ's over to it, and leave the SL1 attached to the USB port on the computer. Your situation should then be resolved because the expresscard sets up its own USB controller.

Just my thoughts ;-)

Hi,

Thanks for the comments DJ Black Vinyl.

I have tried 2 different express cards now and neither of them have worked with my laptop, i think it is something to do with Windows Vista.

I have thus given up trying to connect anything to my laptop and tried on my desktop computer (Which has XP on it) This has worked fine and i have both CDJ400's and Scratch Live connected to it. Is sometimes comes up saying that the bandwidth is exceeded but XP seems to adjust the allocation and they still seem to work.

I'm a little disapointed that Serato say you can use 2 x CDJ400 with Scratch Live a laptop as this does not work, Maybe it is just a Vista problem and it may be fine with XP. But they should at leat warn people.

Thanks

Sorry to hear about your woes dpharrison.... Me, I'm using turntables so I don't come up against that threshold. The Windows Vista thing is so new. I have a laptop running Vista but haven't tried it yet with my setup. I am running the SL1. My suspicions are that Vista is probably more of the culprit than the software. Did either of the two express cards come with Vista drivers?

Hey Dan,

Sorry to hear you couldn't get it working. It won't be due to Vista, I think its your computer in this case, and its hard to know what other computers will not be compatible, simply based on paper specs.

When you tried the express cards, did they simply not work full stop, or did they just present the same USB error?
dpharrison 5:47 PM - 14 January, 2009
Hi DJ Black Vinyl and Nick,

I have tried both express cards and both did nothing, they didn't even ping to register they were connected. I did get one showing up on the Device Manager list but it didn't do anything when i pluged Scratch Live in to it, I even tried pluging in a mouse and that didn't register.

I am going to create a restore disc and try changing it over to XP. If that doesn't work, that laptop's going back to Currys.

Thanks Again

Wow, if there is no ping/ding, then the computer didn't see it properly (as you are already aware). Dumb question though, but did you install the drivers for the device? Often times the manual says to install the drivers first, then install the physical hardware after the drivers installed.

BUT, all in all, I would do like you say and take it back if you still have issues after you switch over to XP. Good luck with that and let us know how it turns out.

Warmest Regards,
DBlack

I also have 2x CDJ 400 which i try to use with serato...

lack on USB power!!! it is completely compatible with the cdj's except i only can use one at the time on usb mode since the sl1 drains 83% and the cdj's 10% each.

laptop has 4x usb ports

Hey Dan,

Any luck with the XP install, or did you end up changing laptops?
dpharrison 7:49 PM - 12 February, 2009
Hi Nick M,

I coludn't get it to work with Vista on my laptop and was told that installing XP on it would make no difference to the bandwidth, so I have had to install Scratch Live on to my XP desktop PC and this works fine with 2 x CDJ400's.

I would hope that sometime in the future, Serato will look to develop Scratch Live to work with 2 x CDJ400's on a laptop. Please let me know as soon as this happens, as i am very dis-apointed that i can't do this and feel i have been misled by being told it does.

Kind Regards

Dan
