I have to look at my iBook, but in the old G3 iBooks there was a little magnetic hook that swings up to keep it closed and sometimes those went fubar and it would stay closed properly.

I think they discontinued that method in the G4 iBooks.

Easier said than done homie! Besides my G4 iBook runs great...and still looks good. I keep getting compliments on how white it still is after all these years. haha!

About the hook. I really dont think its that. because it does still latches...its just the screen that doesnt wanna turn off. if u notice right b4 the hook springs out...the screen will turn off. Soo im guessing if its a hardware prob...theres a switch or something where the screen connects to the rest of the computer.

Easy workaround:

Hit the power button and click "sleep", then close your laptop.

Yeah. I'd go with the workaround. Looks like your iBook has too much tear and wear (on that part that is).

My PowerBook did this and my MacBook Pro does, too. Just force it to sleep or turn it off. I've got an appointment with the Geniuses at the Apple store for something else tomorrow and I'll ask them if they have any ideas.

I avoid doing that unless there's no other option. Turning off the computer without allowing it the chance to run through its shutdown process can cause problems...

Agreed. But i think Tapping it would put it to sleep right? Lately its been working but sacrilicious...if any of the geniuses tell you any good info...id appreciate it if you share it. thanx!

BTW....anybody know what kinda program is "Growl" I noticed it in the "others" catagory in system preference.

Oh...and thanx to everyone else for your help!

Pressing it once brings up a dialog box that gives you the option to shut down, restart and sleep (at least in Tiger... dunno about Leopard).

Out of curiosity, are you unplugging any USB cables after shutting the lid? That'll keep it from sleeping...

I dont think so. I do keep an cooling fan plugged into my comp most of the time. but i believe it has done it b4 without me having cooling fan hooked up.

Genius reset my "power management." To do this: pop out the battery and unplug the power cord and then hold down the power button on the front for five seconds.

Note: I don't know if this has fixed my problem as of yet but he acknowledged after I pressed a bit that this isn't too uncommon.
