Has anyone had a problem with their macbook pros crashing whilst building overviews?

This has just happened to me (twice) today as I had to rebuild all my overviews again. I use an external hard drive (firewire) and the system is pretty much bullet proof for me.

I have built them all now and checked ID3 tags (one needed deleting) and have run Disk Utility and am just running TechTol Deluxe (nothing showing up yet).

Any thoughts or suggestions as to why this happened?

Hello supayoot,

Depending on the version there might be different explanations.
What version of SSL are you using?

Hi Zack

It's 1.8.2

I haven't heard of anything aside from an extremely corrupt file crashing the builder in 1.8.2.

If the builder crashes.. open up the ScratchLIVE folder on the internal drive and look at the overviewbuilder.log file.

The last file listed will be the one the builder crashed on.
Take that out of your SSL library and click the build overviews tab again to start building where you left off.

Let us know how you get along.

cool. will monitor and let you know if it happens again.

the id3 scan that i ran should have picked up any curruption though right?

Scanning the id3 tags won't detect corrupt files.. only building the overview on the files.

I see. But the only way to see a currupt file is in the overviewbuilder.log file once it crashes?

Yes... the last track listed will be the one SSL crashed on.

SSL crashed on me just now.

I was using it with the interface unplugged and it crashed on loading a track.

All overviews have been built. I know which track was loaded prior to the crash.

Shall I send it to you or can I do anything my end.

My SSL has been pretty bullet proof until the last few days, which is wierd.

The track that was playing isn't necessarily going to be the track that crashed SSL.

Where you building overviews or just playing tracks in the offline player?

If you rescan your id3 tags and then click build overviews does it start building any overviews?

I was playing offline.

If i rescan id3 it does not let me rebuild overviews as it says they are "already built"

Does this help narrow things down a bit?

Yes.. if after rescanning and clicking build overviews it says that all overviews are built and you don't see any corrupt file icons next to your tracks then you won't be suffering from corrupt files.

Are you using an external drive?

What version of SSL are you using?

I'm on 1.8.2 and use a Smartdisk Firelite 120g Firewire Drive it has 9.9g free space.

Ok.. I would suggest a couple things.

First, to test out your current setup using 1.8.2, I would move some files from your external drive to your internal, unplug your external, and play the files internally for an extended period of time to see if you still have a crashing problem.

If you don't then the problem might have to do with your external drive and computer communicating together.

The other suggestion would be to download the Public Beta version of 1.8.3 here --> www.scratchlive.net and test it out.

Let us know your findings;)

Could the hard drive be too full?

This is only a very recent problem. I've been on SSL for 3 years.

It may be that the hard drive is too full?

Usually we recommend keeping at least 5 gigs free on a hard drive but freeing up some space is worth a try.

To be on the safe side, I have copied all my files to a newer, bigger hard drive (250g) but am now experiencing problems with itunes not reading the music from the new location. I'll post up a new topic.

Thanks Zach
