Ive recently switched from Vinyl to CDs. I am crying now to find that I cant return to the beginning of a track like a vinyl lift and needle drop. I thought i must have set something up wrong until using search i found this thread:

scratchlive.net

So do i have to set up a cue point for every track? I have the latest version firmware on my CDJ-400s and the most updated scratch live version.

Is this still the case?

(BTW, i wonder if the guy ever successfully burned the control Vinyl to CD?)

Yes, I did, and it does work.

However, since you are using the CDJ-400s, they are natively supported with SSL and you don't need the timecode CDs. All playback is done over the USB with the 400s. Of course you can still use timecode CDs in "traditional" mode, but native mode is much better.

I dont have 3 USBs on my lappy, so i made the very wrong assumption I could play the control CDs just like I did the vinyl records.....put in the Control CDs, press play, and use the track and search buttons accordingly - like a regular CDJ. This was what I was lead to believe by the literature and i assume what you mean by traditional mode.

I can get a song to play as loaded from my computer, but from that point forward not a single function on the CDJ works as expected. i cant even pause the music by pressing the pause button! Very funny stuff is happening, such as my inability to physically rewind the track using the jog wheel past a certain point (it may stop "rewinding" 5 seconds after the beginning for example, and i cant hear those first 5 seconds). In other cases, certain songs once loaded, cue up 2 minutes into the song already! At one point i let a track play to the end, then I could not play another song at all. I could load it, but it was like my A deck got frozen at the end of every track i subsequently loaded. And then theres the whole frustration of not being able to "needle drop the track" to the beginning using the track search <<< button which prompted this thread.

Can you point me to where I can find specifics on how to use the CDJs with scratch live - its not in the manual. I wanted to use scratch live with my CDJs, but have them act as expected as CDJs. Are these normal reports and i dont know what im doing or is there something majorly wrong with my program?

That's why they make USB hubs :). $5-10 at pretty much any store.

If you're going to use the timecode CDs, make sure you've switched to "line" input in the setup menu and you still don't have it set to phono from when you were using turntables. If it's on phono but using CDJs, it will cause many of playback/searching/tracking issues you've described. So check that first.

But I still recommend using native PC/HID mode with the CDJ-400s, it really is a lot better than with the timecode CDs.

i seem to remember reading somewhere that the 400s work ok through a hub, but it is still a good idea to plug the SL1 into the computer directly.

Yeah a hub is in my future, in the meanwhile a more basic question:
Should I be able to control the CDJ like a standard with the control disk?

I meant "like a standard CDJ". (ya know track search, search, cue, play, pause)

Yes, you can track search, cue/play/pause. Just make sure you have line inputs selected in the setup menu, and you're using Absolute mode. Track searching and restarting the track on the CDJ doesn't work in Relative mode. Make sure you also have the master tempo/key lock function turned off on the CDJs.
