MPD 24 Vs. Nano Key

A while back I got an Akai MPD24 to use as a midi trigger. It has always had a lagtime or latency issue. I had tried everything, making sure I had the firmware for it updated, etc... I am using an Apple Powerbook with sufficient RAM. I figured if I could use the pads on it instead of the buttons on my 57 for certain functions I may save some life on my 1500.00 mixer. Bottom line I could never get over the latency issue. This week I picked up one of the new Korg Nano Keys (the keyboard version) and as soon as I plugged it in and programmed it, it worked flawlessly. Just as quick and responsive as the buttons on my 57. Two reasons for this post. One-to let people know who may be looking into the Nano Key that in my experience it works great and Two-to see if anybody else has had the same problem with the MPD24.

had the same issue with the mpd24, wasted LOTS of time trying to fix it and some money, tossed it on ebay.
Im getting the korg Nano key. If you order the black from DJ deals they try and sell you the white one. why can you order it if its not available? more time waisted

damn, i wondered the same thing about the MPD 24. I never really tried to remedy the situation, i just assumed that midi was really slow.

MPK 49 has the same problem.
Akai is getting kinda crappy nowadays.

you need to set the velocity to full on the mpd24. otherwise you need to give it a decent thump to trigger cues etc which will cause timing issues.

Akai Pro Audio is owned by Numark. They bought it a few years ago.
I have the Padkontrol and it works very well.

I'm wrong. Akai was bought out by someone else in 2004 and Numark bought the distribution rights.

+1.
Their endless rotary encoders just stop working if you turn them more than 360°. Wack.

I just got the nano pad, took my lunch hour and drove to the nearest guitar center. Now I'm back at work and for some funny reason i don't feel so good and may go home early....*cough*cough*

LOL!!! I remember when I bought my MacBook Pro doing my lunch hour at the apple store. I didn't even come back to work. I called in and said that I had the shitz and wouldn't feel comfortable being around the office. No questions ask. My boss said to take care and call if I was going to be out tomorrow to.

My MPD24 USB port took a shit last week. plugging in and out over the course of a few months somehow fucked it up. Sucks that I have to send it in for a fix, costs unknown as of yet. Oh, also the LCD is jacked up...
bought a trigger finger on my way to the gig the other night -- first impression, smaller, thinner = better for travelling... but the pads a are also a wee bit smaller. no biggie. programmed it in 10 minutes and used the shit out of it that night.

I love the MPD24. Its the best midi controller I've used with SSL.
No latency issues here. Plug and play, heavy duty, easy switching to different groups.

i love it too. at first i had problems with the latency but then i switched to the "full" function instead the "dynamic", and since then it works perfect.

Yes I have. The Serato guys brought a couple to NAMM and got a chance to mess around with it. Its cool, especially for the price, but I still prefer the MPD24. It a lot more robust.

for the price it is excellent, but pricing aside;
the keys are "clicky" meaning the parts arnt tightly put together
my standard is the old Powermacs and Books,
and I have the same criticism of the new MacBooks,
only the Korg keys are allot more clicky.
I hope they improve this
Im on my second one. some how one of my keys got pulled and it was dangling.
in the future I will have some sort of bag/sleeve for travel
again, for the price its excellent (it could just be improved)
look how tough this would be i79.photobucket.com

I don't have any latency issues with my MPD24, and no issues with the knobs either, track list keeps scrolling after the knob reaches the 128 value. When I twist the knob in the opposite direction, track list stops scrolling just like I would expect it to. Every now and then I need to remap pads/keys/sliders, mostly if I haven't been using it for a while...
I never tried the nano's, but I don't see any reason to get another midi controller as long as I've already got one working well...
(I've used the Akai both on WinXP SP2, and OSX 10.5)

Yes nik, when I twist the knob mapped crate/track scroll, it works just like I would expect it to. Also mapped knobs for: master gain, gain a, gain b, braking & fine pitch, and they work on a "sort of" 1 to 1 basis, ie an "absolute position", if you know what I mean.

That's exactly the issue. If you do *not* twist it, it won't scroll anymore after you reach the 128 value.

Ok, I get you. For me that's not really an issue.
If i wanna go fast in the list, I just twist it fast, then twist back to slow down the scrolling....
Add to this, I don't use this fuction that much, my main midi use is the pads for triggering cues/loops.

A question for anybody who has the Nano KEY; can the buttons on the left be MIDI mapped (pitch, octave, etc.)? Currently using an M-Audio Axiom 25 and its great and all but not something I would gig with. I did a couple of times but its just so damn big.

i just bought a korg nano key and i can't map anything. I have a 15" mac book pro w/ 4 gigs ram. I have version 1.8.3 and 1.9 installed. It doesn't work with both versions. I also tried installing the usb midi driver on the Korg site.
