are you using an external HD thats in another format? If so it wont let you write any changes to the file
Chad S.

it could be many things.
it could be you are almost out of room on your HD. The files might be "read only" or if using an external, could be a conflicting format. After building the overviews do you see any icons that look like a cd with a crack or lightning bolt through it?

I'm do have an external drive that all my music is on it's an 80gb hard drive...I built my overviews on all my songs but I know some of my song's are not 130 bpm so I change them to the right beats like 62 bpm ect.. but when I play the song that I changed the beat's on it jumps back to the beat that I just erased. If you have any way of fixing this please reply.....thanks

you might need to rebuild the overview on that track.
When your music falls outside of the range you selected it is common for it to double of half the actual BPM. So your songs that you know to be 62 registering at 130, makes sense. You can select the proper range for it and then manually drag it onto the build overviews tab and that should do the trick.

I did all the above and when I play a song that I changed already it jumps back to the old bpm that the build overview built the first time...it's wierd
say i did the build overview for ciara "like a boy" it gave me 130 bpm now i know this song is only about 62 bpm, I change it to 62 bpm, now I play the record and in the box I just put 62 bpm in changes back to 130 bpm soon as the record starts or even if I just put it in the player and that's even if i have protect libray locked it still changes.

did you try selecting a new bpm range and then rebuilding the overview? Next to the build overview tab. there is "set auto bpm" which you will want to check. To the right of that is where you select the proper range.
I'm almost out of ideas and will ask some of the dev team to look at this.

Hi devohb,
Try stripping and converting the tags of a couple of songs that are doing this, and then re-build the overviews and bpms.
Instructions on how to do this are here: serato.com

devonhb,
Even if you don't use iTunes you can use it to strip and convert your files.

Write protected means you can't write information to it.
That file is 'read only'.
If they are 'read only' you won't be able to save them in your crates or change the id3 tag info.
To open up a file from within SSL highlight the file and hold down ctrl+R (PC) or apple+R (Mac).
This will open up a separate browser and the song should be highlighted.
From there either right click and go to 'properties' (PC) or hold down apple+I (Mac) to 'get info'.
Once in there you can check to see if the files is 'read and write'.
If it is read only than you will want to change the properties of the folder the song is in and more than likely that will change the properties of all the songs your having issues with.
If your using a PC, your external can be formatted to anything but Mac Journaled.
If your wanting your external to be able to read and write on both a PC and a Mac I would either format the drive FAT32 or format it NTFS but use this program --> www.paragon-software.com

PLease let me see if I understood your post -
*You were on vista and then switched to XP
*1.8.3 solved the bpm problems
*you installed 1.8.0 as well and bpms stayed
*songs won't stay ?????
1.8.3 has no feature differences over 1.8.2 What it has is 6 fixes for bugs that we were able to get a quick handle on. Since that is the only difference we are not releasing it as "a new version".

I tried the 1.8.3 and my beats stay now but It erased all my crates and now the times on the songs will not stay.what can I do I tried every version of serato and none of them seem to be working for me, when I use version 1.8.2 all my songs are staticky when I use 1.8.0 or 1.8.1 everything works fine but the beats won't stay, when I turn off the serato nothing will ever stay saved.

I have final scratch that I use too, I have two hard drives so i copied my other drive that I use when I use final scratch and I use one for serato and one for fs but all my songs were id tagged in final scratch. do you think that has something to do with it?

I'm not sure what happened but updating to 1.8.3 shouldn't have erased your crates.
What do you mean by "the times on the songs will not stay"?

You use two different external hard drives?
Do both have the same issues when used with SSL?

So, early in this discussion CHAD S. asked if devohb was using iTunes . . .
Why would iTunes be a cause of the problem?
I am using iTunes and would like to know what are the benefits & negative aspects of using iTunes to categorize my music library.
Thanks, dj I, STORM (nyc)
