Hello,
Since tonight, my SSL is unable to run... When I'm launching it, it craches immediatly. If i go very very fast while loading to setup, and uncheck the "read itunes library", it dies work and Serati Launches. As soon as i check "Read iTunes library", it crashes... What is strange, is that i used it earlier today without any problem. It happened to my friend as well, tonight as well...

Hi Jose and thanks for the answer,

I have a Macbook Black 2,4ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 Go 667Mhz DDR2 SDRAM, running Mac OS X 10.5.5. My iTunes is 8.0.1 (10) ans Serato is 1.8.2 (18221)

What is strange is that i didn't do any upgrade yesterday of any soft. My Serato was working fine. Then i had to go out. I got my friend DJ Ewone who will be mixing with me tonight at one of the biggest Hip Hop Party in Paris (Hip Hop Loves Soul) in front of 2000 people calling me saying he can not luanch Serato anymore, that it does crashes right away. When I get to my yesterday's gig, i'm launching Serato, and boom - crashing right away. Going (in less than 1 sec before Serato crashes) to setup > library > uncheck "read iTunes library" will then allow SSL to run normaly. But without iTunes, where all my library is...

I've been having the exact same problem. I fixed it initially by uninstalling iTunes 8.0 and reinstalling it. It worked fine for a few weeks and then today it happened again. I think it may have something to do with .m4a files as it seems to crash when trying to read them from the iTunes library.
When I uninstalled and reinstalled I also deleted all my .m4a files from my library.

I'm now updating to iTunes 8.01 and have removed a few more .m4a files that were added to my library earlier today. I'll report back if this new solution works.

I do believe it's an iTunes issue rather than a Serato issue though.

Ok. It's kind of a hassle but I figured out how to fix this, hopefully it will work for you. I've now had this happen to me twice, and this method worked both times for me.

First off I got rid of all the .m4a files. I seemed to have one (or more) of them that were causing Scratch Live to crash quickly while trying to read my iTunes library. I wouldn't event have them in there in the first place but a few were in some folders of music I put into my library.

Then I uninstalled iTunes 8 & Scratch Live 1.82 and also threw away all my Scratch Live folders (since I use iTunes I didn't lose any crates).

Then I reinstalled iTunes (8.01) & Scratch Live. I didn't lose any overviews but I did have to resize & organize the list view from scratch. But it works so the hassle was worth it.

J'espère que ça marche pour toi Dirty. Not sure if this will work for everyone but it's worked for me. I was really worried about my gig tonight too. Was about to do some old school digging in the crates.
;)

Cheers!

Yup. My solution ended up not working once more actually.
Got it to work fine at home, built some overviews, packed up and went to spin. Fired up Scratch Live at the club and had the same problem where it crashed right away. Got it to work eventually by throwing out my SL folders then restarting SL.

I never had this problem before iTunes 8.

Also I have SL folders both on my macbook and on my external (where all my music & iTunes library is). Could this have anything to do with it as well?

I still believe this is an iTunes 8 issue since it seems like none of us have had this happen in this manner before it was released. And unfortunately there's no easy way to go back to prior versions of iTunes.

Ok. Got another update after spending way too many hours on this...

The only way I'm able to keep SL from crashing while loading is by deleting my Database V2 file from my external drive before I open SL up. While this works to run SL it loses any overviews that were built and is quite annoying to say the least.
It runs fine with leaving the other V2 database on my macbook so at last the field views retain their settings.

Mods, do you have any idea what's going on?

I've deleted all corrupt files, .m4a files, etc... So I'm at a loss for how to fix this.

Thanks!

Thanks for the details about this problem guys, it definetely looks like the issue comes from iTunes 8.0.1. , and we're looking into a solution. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for sharing information about this, it helps us narrow down the problem and get closer to the solution.

I hope you get a solution soon ;-)
It's very annoying to being able to browse/search from your iTunes library.

So, in the meanwhile, as a workaround, you can, in less than 2 seconds (before Serato does crash) go quickly to setup then library and uncheck the "read iTunes library". It will crash right after the uncheck, but then the next time it will open SSL without a problem. But you have to be VERY quick. It tool me 15 minutes to do it with the trackpad. It's easier with a mouse...

You can also remove the iTunes Music Library.xml file from the iTunes folder within your User Music folder. Open SSL and uncheck the "read iTunes library" option.

But there is no solution to read the iTunes library until you publish a fix i guess? Do you plan to publish one soon? This is really becoming a problem to not be able to browse your iTunes library.
To add a track, I have to go to iTunes, select the track, do a apple/right click, "show the file in finder", then drop the file manually into my Serato... Things that you can't really do when you're at a gig, or at the radio...

Yes.. but is it worth not being able to even open SSL? This is one of the many issues we're constantly having to deal with when using iTunes with SSL.
I understand the convenience of using iTunes but unfortunately we don't have any control over it thus we run into issues when using it with our program.

I have never had a problem with scratch live, but just today i tried to open scratchlive (without hardware connected) and it "unexpectedly quits" whilst loading crates.

I have reinstalled the software with no luck..it worked fine two days ago.

The only changes to my Mac is i have downloaded some tunes from Whitelable.net and installed Windws Media Player 9 for osx.

I have tried removing these files/software but still get same problem..

I have read the above msgs and it seems strange that i have been using iTunes 8.01 since it was released and scratchlive was working fine up until now..

I have a macbook with osx 10.4.11 using scratchlive 1.8.1 with itunes 8.0 and this works fine..

pls help..

I used the workaround as well and it worked beautifully up to the point where I tried to import my playlists. When I select the XML file, I get the following message: The file "iTunes Music Library.xml" cannot be imported. An unknown error has occurred (-50). Now SSL works again and all my tracks and crates show up, but I lost all my iTunes playlists, which sucks because that's how I organized all my tracks. When I try reverting back to my old library, my playlists are all there but SSL won't work. Does anybody else have that issue?

I've come across this before and wasn't able to get around it. My guess is that your iTunes Library file, used to create the .xml file, is perma-tweaked :(

You can try exporting individual playlists, instead of your entire library, and then import those playlists into your new library.

Here's the text only version of the article. The real deal should be available soon :)

This "how-to" details the necessary steps to create a new iTunes library. For users having issues with iTunes version 8.0.1, creating a new iTunes library is, so far, the only workaround available to resolve the crashing problems that occur when attempting to open Scratch LIVE.

Steps to create a different iTunes Library

1. If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.

2. If you are using a Mac, open iTunes and immediately hold down the Alt Option key.

3. If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.

4. You should see the following screen:

(insert pic here)

(If you do not see the above window, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work).

5. Click Create Library and a New iTunes Library window will pop up.

6. Click Save within the New iTunes Library window.

7. iTunes will create an iTunes 1 folder in your Music folder and open a brand new iTunes library (don't worry your old playlists and songs are fine)

8. Go into the iTunes Preferences and click on the Advanced tab.

9. Uncheck the option "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" and then close the iTunes Preferences (this will prevent iTunes from duplicating all of your audio files).

10. At the top of iTunes screen click File, go to where is says Library, and then choose Import Playlists

11. Go to the iTunes folder (within your user Music folder) and choose to open the iTunes Music Library.xml file.

12. iTunes will begin to import your old playlists and etc into your new iTunes library (this may take quite a while).

13. Once iTunes is finished, your new iTunes library should display all the old playlists from your previous library.

14. Close iTunes

15. Start ScratchLIVE and your iTunes Library will load as it did before.

*Note* Do not delete the old iTunes folder found within your user Music folder
